The Executive Director,

Respected sir,
SUB: In protest against the inclusion of products from multinational companies
in the syllabus of 'IT @ SCHOOL'
It's a very dissappointing fact that when the whole world is moving towards
Free software, we at kerala are going behind a major MNC - Microsoft. I hereby register
my protest in such an act from 'IT @ SCHOOL' Project team.
Breaking of prototypes will definetly help us in finding economical and high quality
products for our future generation.
For students and programmers, the GNU Linux contains 'GNU Compiler Collections'
which includes C, C++, FORTRAN, PERL, TCL etc. Also, for DTP and other publishing purposes,
it includes GNU Office utilities like Abi-Word, gedit, and other worksheet utilities,
all these with a nominal cost of Rs 700-800/-. The software as it is, is free and
the cost is accounted towards the media (CD + Documentation) included.
By this letter, I urge you to take this matter seriously and suggest necessary modifications
in the action plan of 'IT @ SCHOOL' project.
Wishing you all the best and wishing all 'Students @ SCHOOL' a bright future,
Thanking you,
Yours faithfully
Manjush G. Menon.

Hi all,
Is there any specialised tools in GNU/Linux for use of
Journalists(Newspaper)? I think scribus is one of them.If there are
any more tools please provide info about it. GUI based tools are
prefered. also let me know that whether they are used in the industry.

Kerala, a tiny coastal state in south India, is a site of significant
popularity of free software and GNU/Linux. What lessons can Kerala
teach other areas about using free and open source software?

Hello everybody,
I have been here, in this mailing list, for a month. I am Tinku Sampath
from Kerala. I am doing 4th semester of MCA at Govt. Engineering
College, Thrissur, Kerala. As some of you know, we MCA students were
behind the Renaissance 2005, the well appreciated, but at the same time
unpopular national seminar on Free and Open Source Software which was
held on last February at the college. We organized the event as the
first little contribution to the Free Software community from our part.
Hope that Renaissance 2006 will be realized in a more passionate way and
will fulfill everyones expectation.
Let me come to the purpose of this mail. We are planning to build a Free
Software Users Group (FSUG) for our college. At this occasion, we would
like to know is there are any other FSUGs or LUGs or GLUGs or any kind
of that working now concentrating Thrissur. If there, we can together
form an active one. I think, this will be a great opportunity for our
college students to contribute their technical abilities in promoting
the FLOSS. If there is any existing group, please mail me with details
as soon as possible.
I would like to invite each member of this group to contribute their
ideas or dream about an FSUG. I am sure that your experience and
expertise will help us in various matters.

Sri Lanka Declares an Open Source Week
Posted by Zonk on Sunday August 28, @11:43AM
from the tux-for-all dept.
AnuradhaRatnaweera writes "Sri Lankan Government has declared (google
cache) the week starting from the 5th of September as the National Free
and Open Source Software Week. The FOSS Community, Government's ICTA and
the industry are working together to organize the week's events
including the FOSSSL Conference and Asia Open Source Symposium. The week
has been selected to end (well, almost) with the Software Freedom Day."
Hello Friends,
I am here to inform you about an issue in 11th Class.
Now I am studying in 11th class - Computer Science.
Our text book is following the proprietary C++
compiler (Turbo C++ Compiler) and there is nothing
about Software freedom and importance of free
software.
We are forced to follow the proprietary environment.
Even a few students don't know what the free software
is? But some of them heard about 'Linux' but they
don't know what is GNU.
Last year, there were topics about GNU/Linux and M$
Windows in our 10th class IT@School text books. As a
result of struggles done by FSF India, GNU/Linux
gained prominence in IT syllabus from this year. LAst
year, I Also Noticed the news which had come in
newspapers - "Govt promised to give importance to free
software in 10th class syllabus and Govt had announced
that the coming 11th class Computer Sc syllabus will
give importance to free software and GNU/Linux"
Now Govt didn't follow their announcement. We are
following same and old Com Sc syllabus with
proprietary environment!
we are the Ist batch who followed GNU/Linux and M$
Windows last year. Now we are forced to use
proprietary software.
g++, gcc is the best compiler and is a freesoftware,
then why should we follow Turbo? which is a
proprietary?
There should be some topics to describe the importance
of Free Software, and something should be done to make
GNU/Linux as the default platform.
I'm waiting for your comments.
Thanking you,
Sarath Lakshman

"Linux fracas not the main game: RMS" By Sam Varghese August 25, 2005

<quote>
The fuss over the Linux trademark has diverted attention from the real
issue - the freedom to change and redistribute software, the founder
of the GNU Project and the Free Software Foundation, Richard M.
Stallman, says. .....
"In this particular case, though, the naming issue seems rather to
distract attention from freedom, so I'd rather focus the attention
back where it belongs," he said.
Stallman said he would not seek payment to allow people to use the GNU
name. "Anyone who makes a GNU/Linux distribution ought to call it
such, but most of them don't. We won't ask people to pay to give us
credit for our work," he said. ...
