FYI.
If you like the combination of opensolaris kernel and a ubuntu
userland and are a open source developer, this might be of interest to
you.
NexentaOS is a registered project on launchpad.net (ubuntu's
collaboration platform).
NCP 1.0 is based on Ubuntu Dapper sources. NCP will move to 2.0 and be
based on Ubuntu Hardy. There is a hackathon planned around this
effort.
Expect the below announcement on suitable Debian & Ubuntu developer shortly.
See DPL's note about Nexenta after last year's DebConf

Dear NexentaOS Developers and Users!
Starting this Saturday, we are inviting all Debian/Nexenta and
OpenSolaris developers and users to participate in our first Hackathon
event.
Hackathon starts on this Saturday 05/31/2008 and continues during first
week of June. Development coordinated at #nexenta on freenode IRC.
We are migrating from Ubuntu Dapper to Ubuntu Hardy user land and will
be hacking on very initial version of NCP 2.0.
You don't need to install Nexenta, (ZFS-powered) build environment and
SSH access to the dedicated Zone will be automatically (see devzone
package) provided to interested developers by request on #nexenta
freenode IRC.
The work coordinated at #nexenta freenode IRC and this static web page:
http://www.nexenta.org/Hackathon
ZFS-powered Nexenta Zones managed on specially prepared NexentaOS build
servers connected to the public Internet. Servers and Internet
collocation kindly provided by Stanford University, CA.
Join now and make a difference! It is going to be fun!

to see the interconnections.

Pandit Nehru in his first convocation address in 1956 said "Here in the
place of that Hijli Detention Camp stands the fine monument of India,
representing India's urges,India's future in the making. this picture
seems to me symbolical of the changes that are coming to India."
In Sept. 15, 1956, the Parliament of India passed an act known as the
Indian Institute of Technology(Kharagpur) Act declaring this Institute
as an Institute of national importance. The Institute was also given the
status of an autonomous University. From this modest start in 1950, IIT
Kharagpur has been engaged in a steady process of development with about
18 academic departments, five centres of excellence. the vast tree-laden
campus, spreading over 2100 acres has a self contained township of over
15,000 inhabitants. Currently we have about 450 faculty, 2200 employees
and 2700 students on the campus.

I didn't know this. Thanks for sending this. IITs are a product of
Nehru's vision. Thinking about this I had jumped from techonology to
economics. Did see a networking course and was impressive.
Though lot of people have criticism on Nehru's socialist vision : The
fact is that the IIT's (and all the recognition they and their alumnus
get) are an outcome of just those policies, "ensuring highest-quality
education regardless of economic status"
This kind of high quality education - regardless of economic status is a
very important need to today ...especially primary education - there are
attempts to privatise and derail this - this will not do us good -
this is also an important example of what is possible when government
can work keenly on community initiatives.
"The national body of South Africa (SABS), as a P member of JTC 1,
hereby submits an appeal against the outcome of the fast track
processing of DIS 29500 Office open XML. This is based on the
procedures followed before and during the ballot resolution meeting
(BRM) held from 25 to 29 February 2008 to discuss the comments
submitted on the fast-tracked DIS 29500 and the proposed responses
from Ecma."
Read the full letter from
http://www.noooxml.org/forum/t-61468/south-africa-appeals-against-ooxml-cal…
Can we get BIS to back this appeal, considering it has voted no and
raised concerns about the process?
Cheers

Hi
I have an Windoze using relative who's experiencing all the symptoms
his OS is famous for; mysterious hangings, spyware, viruses etc.
I tried to sell him the idea of Linux, showed him my laptop running
Sabayon. With Firefox, KOffice and VLC he was more than convinced,
until we took a look at Pidgin.
He has a daughter who lives in the UK, whom he chats with daily via
Gtalk, so this is a very vital application.
He uses audio conferencing. She also shares photos with via Gtalk's
file transfer.
My question is
- how can I do audio conferencing on Pidgin?
- how can I transfer files between Gtalk and Pidgin, since most
people use Gtalk?
- is there any other client i can use to over come this problem?
hi,
was trying to checkout moodle and SELF. thought it will be good to share the info.. correct me if i am wrong..

from :
http://foss.in/2007/register/slides/SELF_Platform_350.pdf
SELF : These materials are organised in a complex hierarchical way: where one course module can be used by another course. this might not be possible with moodle.
COURSE Orgn has : object orientation , ● agent orientation , ● distributed, ● standard complaint ( FOL based ), representation, ● version control system for data as well as metadata - this might not be possible with moodle again
nurture freedom : each resource is a software agent specially crafted to nurture and propagate the virtues of freedom - basically it will shout !@@#@ if .doc is used i guess
to summarise i think this is the main difference in SELF:
- collection, harvesting, atomizing of resources
- organization and networking to create courses distribution of courses in open standards
