Hi all, Of late, I have noticed that MTNL's DNS servers 203.94.227.70 and 203.94.243.70 are unresponsive from time to time. Also google and google related sites (gmail, orkut, etc.) open very sluggishly.
Has anyone here experienced this? Does anyone know any DNS servers better than MTNL's?
Regards, Mohan S N

I don't know if these are better, but they work for me without any trouble.
202.56.230.5 202.56.240.5

Those are Bharti (Airtel's) public DNS servers. I'd not recommend using them since one day Airtel may get a clue and stop them acting as public relays.

202.56.230.5 202.56.240.5
202.56.240.5 works for me: it is as good as mtnl's primary dns (203.94.227.70) and twice as good as mtnl's sec.

You might want to run local caching bind, and/or use OpenDNS too.

Yes its been so from about 2 weeks. Any site stops responding randomly. Sometimes Yahoo or sometimes Google or sometimes MSN stops. Traceroute shows problems in routing. If you disconnect and reconnect 1-2 times, it picks up new route and site starts working.
I wrote to MTNL but they replied back asking me to contact 1504. And 1504 person doesnt understand anything. Wonder why do they have to provide email address when their reply is to contact 1504.
Not related to this problem but for DNS try www.opendns.com

I second that. I was using OpenDNS. Replaced their IPs with MTNL DNS IPs. But behavior continues.

I third that. At first I too thought it might be a DNS issue but it seems to be a routing issue.

I'd fourth you, but I think we are seeing two problems: 1) When MTNL's DNS servers go down, as they are distressingly often, everything fails. I'll wait and watch if openDNS' servers do the trick. 2) When it is up, google pages open at snail's pace. Maybe routing is the problem here. Any tcpdump gurus here?

MTNL Triband has lost its shine. Its IPTV is most hopeless and even after unsubscribing from it 3 months ago, its still hanging round my neck like dead weight. The QCS now tells me that my WO still shows incomplete installation, let alone unsubscribe.

If the installation is incomplete they cant bill you. Get a written statement from them.
BTW what is was the problem. Not (directly) linux related but im sure many on the list would be interested.

I had unsubscribed in writing and IOL CC even confirmed the same but the records are not updated at MTNL. The QCS now says that until I deposit the equipment at their exchange, I will keep getting billed. First he was even surprised that I was getting billed as his records show installation as incomplete. I will have to take the matter up with higher authorities.
It does not boot up and keeps trying again and again. If by chance the system is up, while watching the movie, the pic will keep freezing. Plus MTNL and IOL do not have a proper coordination between them. It was quite frustrating for our family to sit in front of the set and keep watching only booting messages repeatedly.

IPTV isn't really as well packaged as TriBand was / is. BTW Triband still rocks. It has minor problems now and then but nothing too big as compared to the cable ISPs i've seen. So chill :)

It really depends on the quality of cabling in your area. I know people who complain to no end about erratic connections using Triband (especially in areas in borivali west). I personally have had no major connectivity issues.

When the IPTV would be down, I cross checked it with internet access and that worked. If quality of cabling is not good, its MTNL's job to rectify it. It is earning well. Why should lines go down every monsoon in spite of using jelly filled or sealed joints. This year my lines were down for 21 days. Luckily I had unsubscribed from IPTV by then. Now we are happily using TATA Sky. "Isko laga dala...."

Tata Indicom FWT and CDMA usbmodem works reasonably well. The FWTs have a downtime of about 3 days per year. And they actually had a tech suport guy 3 yrs back in Pune who new something about Linux. The local call center zombie would patch u on to Prasad (afair) if u said linux.

TATA Indicom sent bills when I was not their customer. TATA Indicom tried conning me. They had the guts to actually threaten me with "legal action". TATA bought over 7star and screwed up the one decent cable ISP in my area... If you want I can go on and on about horrible things that TATA has done in my life. I'm not alone. I think a polite constructive letter to Mr. Ratan Tata, pointing him to the low point reached by the great brand that once symbolised ethics and professionalism may help improve things in the near future. Sometimes the middle level managers do not present the right picture to the top bosses.

Hes Ratan Tata. If hes really that great then he should've figured out by himself, right? No intention of flaming but if the higher ups are really serious about customer satisfaction then it reflects in the lower rung employees too.
Let us please end this thread on this note.

the best way to end a thread is not to reply to it - let it die. Having the last word, and then saying 'lets end the thread' is the best way to prolong it. So let's end this thread on *this* note ;-)

Idiots (read > VSNL < read) never were able to make MY broadband installation work with Linux in Pune. They f didn't support it. I only made it when somebody from PLUG gave me pointers. And now they have obliged me with domain registration (davelok.com) and website hosting that don't work!! Haven't worked since January, and countless calls to their zombie call centre are only returned with empty promises.
All diagnostics that I've tried basically give me the following information:
Background: This error indicates that the gateway could not find an
authoritative DNS server for the website you are trying to access.
If only the clueless idiots would understand...and provide some solution!

Its not just the dns but also the routes and their ppp / adsl equipment. Packets seemed to be looping between two vsnl routers. VSNL is still the monopoly for all internet traffic. The strange part was no ping to several adsl modems but ssh worked. And even better no google etc from my location but ssh to thane and google etc are available. after sometime the status is reversed. Best part: random download speeds of infinity - no i was not stoned - mozilla-firefox (10MB) downloaded in 3 secs. And the tarball is ok.
