Hi ,
Sorry if it soudned so. Will like to take it back.
However let me explain what i meant.
because of systemic issues - the children hardly get into engineering and technology education.
most of them drop out during their 10+2.
some folks become accountants or join b.com evening college ( this is what the bright kids who some how cross through all hurdles maybe 10% of the lot)
so if some one can train them on tally or someone get a certification from know software company - closed or open - will help them get jobs...
something like mutlimedia design which can leverage on current skills - where folks can get jobs independent of degree bckground etc.
in fact we want some one to look at free software oppurtuities - which have viability in the market..will be happy if we can get any help
regards senthil

Why the name Slum Needs? Sounds very discriminating.

hi, we are upto something in blr. its part time activity and in the initial stages..however we are passionate about it and hope it will workout well.. your participation and comments on what we should be doing will be useful. visit : http://slumdweller.wikispaces.com/ http://slumdweller.wikispaces.com/ to get an idea of whats it all about. the challenges for folks in the foss community is at multiple levels a) creating curriculum - which is community owned b) designing coures - specific to the slum needs - getting students certifications - which helps them get jobs. regards Senthil

hi ...all,
We can go with words like .... "itmission"
Let's check what other say ... :)
Here are few suggestions I may give (I'm you would already know many of these). Some of these may not apply to non-programming courses.
1. We must teach tasks not tools (teach word-processing not MS Word or oowriter). 2. We must train them on multiple tools accomplishing same task with more emphasis on FOSS software. 3. We must start training right from installation of necessary s/w not just using them. 4. We should encourage learning and understanding command-line tools. Even on Windows these tools are sometimes useful to get the job done faster. 5. *Piracy must be discouraged with all force possible.* Students must also be made aware of its illegal aspects. New computer users would only then be able to appreciate the true usefulness of Free and Open-Source Software. 6. They must be encouraged to involve themselves in development of FOSS. They can start with bug reports and move upward.
Just my 0.02p.

I have visited the slumdweller. I am reminded of the slumprofessor who was with us in the 70s - Bharat Junjhanwala and his work here. I reserve my comments to just one point. It is stated that the Markets are good but it needs adult supervision: Whatever the authors meant by that I only feel that the `adult supervision' they do is only to increase their profit in the market even if it is by managing the slums they create. How many Microsoft engineers does it take to change a light bulb?
None. They just declare darkness the new standard. _______________________________________________ FSUG-Bangalore mailing list FSUG-Bangalore@mm.gnu.org.in http://mm.gnu.org.in/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/fsug-bangalore
