*An Appeal*
Dear Friends,
Bihar has been reeling under floods of an unprecedented nature leading to large-scale death and destruction. Although the resilient people of Bihar are used with the floods which are almost a perennial feature, the present floods have taken the nature of a National Calamity as the River Kosi has changed its course and is flowing in the opposite direction. This is a situation which was unforeseen and many districts of Bihar are totally submerged and lakhs of people are marooned without food or relief. About 16 districts have been submerged and more than 20 lakhs people have become homeless.
The Government machinery is doing its bit, but the sheer magnitude of the calamity makes it almost impossible for it to be handled by the Government alone. There is no assessment of the actual loss of lives and property as many areas are still inaccessible. The threat of epidemics is also something that looms large in such circumstances. It becomes the duty of all patriotic citizens to rise to the occasion and assist in such relief efforts.
The Forum For Science and Development and Free Software Movement-Karnataka is organizing collection of relief for the flood victims in an effort to provide succour to the suffering. A Relief Team will leave to Bihar in the Second week of October and along with the Bharat Gyan Vigyan Samiti disburse relief in the affected areas. We request you to contribute generously in this endeavor so that we can share their suffering and mitigate it to some extent. Our volunteers will be approaching you individually for your contributions and also seek your support to meet concerned officials in your establishment to make it a meaningful effort.
In anticipation of your support and cooperation,
Thanking You,

First of all, this message was clearly marked OT. A genuine appeal for helping our brothers and sisters in crisis should never be discouraged. The whole idea of Free Software is tightly integrated with the idea of sharing and helping others. If some of our members are not interested, let them just ignore the mail, let the interested ones help.

thanks for the information --- it would be better to insert while sending mail at first -- otherwise unnecessary waste of time, energy , and bandwidth.
sometime people ask money for conducting activities relevant to free software from free software foundation,
and then some people are interested to take help of free software movement / foundation to send money for our brothers and sisters who have got affected by floods,
and some are interested to make name and fame either using free softwares or free software movement or free software foundation..
--All this is fine --- free software could be used for whatever purpose a user wants.
BUT --- how many of us have really contributed to free software foundation --- and how many have we motivated to become fellow / associate of free software foundation .. ----------- i dont know how many of us ( including me )
carrying free softwares philosophy to any walk of life is very good -- but practical issues like when we go and ask for money we need proper channel to approach... ( there are many we can approach ---- my suggestion is if any one is relly interested collect some receipt books from fsf-india office and then go for collection --so that the one who donates will have a tax benifit and some money will go to fsf-india also )
if some one from outside our country contact for donating looking at the mails either in the local fsug or fsf-friends list who do they contact ? fsf-india otherwise if a newbeee looks at the mail and wants to donate where he should ? it is to fsf-india then only he/she can get some tax benifit and also fsf can forward that amount which will good for all......
LETS contribute to fsf-india and request fsf-india to forward the funds to the relief fund.....if at all we are so concerned about free softwares, brothers and sisters in bihar...... and the integrity of our nation...

You are mixing too many thoughts in all your mails. Please calm down. Don't scream at people by using CAPS. It is not good manners. Also don't send private mails sent to you to a mailing list without permission from the sender. It is considered breach of trust and privacy. Are people worried that since there was no [OT] in the header they might get drowned in a flood of mails?

Dear friends,
I don't understand the confusions behind such long list of mails regarding a very genuine cause which is one of the most devastating man made issue. I hope the freedom of those numerous individuals are much more meanful thane the fight for the freedom of software. If this is an out of topic in this list, then the meaning of "Freedom" for which this group exist itself need to be clarified.
Now those who are interested could contribute to the initiative if they feel to do so, and those who are not interested need not contribute. Why the long list of mails and regarding the genuinity of this initiative in this mail list are all pitiable. Instead of such arguments by few people, I feel decision regarding this could be taken by the view of majoriy of the member rather than flooding our mail boxes with mails.
Thanks & Regards Nidhin

what is wrong if friends from the free software movement want to support relief.....its about COMMUNITY participation ..... and many of them from bihar are making earnest appeals .... in fact i would be sad if my personal friend talked a lot about COMMUNITY and restricited it to SOFTWARE alone. however these are just my opinion...
things there are really bad...some friends of mine are involved in relief efforts...one of them is planning to go there for 10 days. anyone wanting to go do let us know. there will also be a team leaving from chennai on the 15th with considerable amount of relief material...anyone planning to go should be physically fit and should stay for atelast 10 days .. some of them ( large number of CLOSED SOFTWARE volunteers from blr along with a large number of vols worldwide ) were also invovled in Tsunami relief efforts and they made a lot of difference ... also it was a very different COMMUNITY experience for many of us
BGVS ( Bharathiya Gyan Vignyan Samithi) has also setup relief camps in 7 districts .. i feel we can support bgvs or other orgns having field presence ... and a plan to reach relief material there to the affected asap ....
i amazed to see this flooded thread while opening my mailbox today (i came to Thrissur town now from my village to get into a internet cafe) . while reading it i dont feel there is a conflict of interest in this. The whole discussion went wrong with disturbing directions
I feel Vikram was crossposting appeals to various lists. But forgot to add an Offtopic tag in subject while posting to this list and FSF-Friends, Both are specifically for community Discussions realated to free software. Arky etc are managaed this very well in past FSUG-bangalore archives and shared a lot of Film festival news etc with proper tagging . I too support the cause of Flood relief in bihar. but i dont think no one here is restricted to software. Free software lives in the Society by addressing its realities.I agree we have solidarity to a lot of social causes. There are a lot of listservs existing for these discussions too. But since FSUG list is specifically for discussiong Free Software issues it is good to put a Offtopic tag on other issues to keep list ethiquities and imporatance for software cause. It is not minimising the importance of any issue. But just a good list practice
Lets stop this thread and continue with SFD planning. we have enough to do in a short timespan
PS: I personally other hundred lists to discuss about solidarity. If there is a need for SAHANA (disaster management system) or Relief & rehabilitation management system i will use this list

the fund that is been collected by membership/ associate will be atleast in india is used for tasks like organizing main events inline with fsf-india
regarding rights ------ ?? what rights i did not understand -- we have right to go if at all any one from fsf calls a meet as fellowship meet or attend parties for fellows of fsf -- which recently happening in case of GNU 's 25th anniversary --- in other parts of the world ... and many other rights are put up in the above link
Duties ---------- it is left to our concious -- no where officially mentioned that the duties or so and so regarding associate fellows ---- it is a contribution to free software foundation ----
i personally feel is if we believe in the free software philosophy -- we should carry on the movement started by RMS -- and see that every one around us are aware about their freedom , thats all i know
i dont think fsf -might have mentioned that restrictions about duties anywahere, ya but we have some right which can be seen in the link above ...
