Hi Everyone...
First of all let me profusely apologise for the rather delayed email... Its been pending for many days and I just got a chance to send it in.
Okay - first a short snapshot of major stuff that we discussed regarding the organisation of a GPLv3 event. I'm going to focus and quote only on that part of our discussion... please do feel to add in anything that you feel I left out.
1. We discussed venues like public halls, IISc and IIM. There is a small follow-up to this after our visit to IISc on Monday and IIM on Tuesday. Shivanand and I met Prof Gopinath at IISc. Due to other engagements that he has it would not be possible to involve him in organising the conference at IISc. However, he is very interested in the conference and would be willing to join ing.
We then met Prof Rahul De' and Prof Shankar Venkatgiri at IIM-B on Tuesday. They were very upbeat about the possiblities of organising the conference at IIM. Now we need to indicate some dates to them so that they can make a proposal to their committee (at the Centre of Public Policy at IIMB) and get a nod on whether they can hold the event there.
2. Kanti raised a very very important point about assembling an action team here in Bangalore. He said that as a precursor to organising an event on such a large scale, we should first organise series of smaller events. This will help us in proving to ourselves that we can indeed organise a much bigger event.
Based on Kanti's feedback, all of us decided that this is definitely needed and doable. Basically, working together as a team is very important and if we work together to do smaller events, it will help increase understanding amongst all of us who have volunteered to help out for the GPLv3 event.
To start with, we will have another meet at BMSCE to discuss and understand the GPLv2. I volunteered to make a presentation on this. (Don't know if I'm biting off more than I could chew, but lets see...) And then we decided that we will discuss about the license to ensure that all of us understand it very well.
This event will a more of a team-building event. The idea is to ensure that we all know and understand each other enough to be able to work together for organising the GPLv3 conference.
3. Of course, I can't miss out mentioning the coffee we had at Koshy's. And the fun that it was sitting in Cubbon Park to have our discussion... I think we can make Cubbon Part our regular meeting place. Not the same rock... maybe a different one every time.
4. Briefly, we also touched upon the topic of offering projects and seminars to students.
Many Many thanks to:
Rakesh (arky) - for setting the temper and direction for so many of the meeting topics. Rakesh was also the one, I guess, who knew almost everyone present.
Praveen A, Kushal Das, Ramkrishna Reddy, Anush Shetty, Nirmal Thacker, Kanti, and Bimal Mankara for contributing very actively to the healthy discussion.
Many thanks to all others who attended and volunteered. I could not quote everyone's name above. Please don't feel bad about it.
Here is a list of people who attended:
Kushal Das Isaac Praveen Akshay SasiKumar Basil Baby Bimal mankara Sajith K.C Anush Shetty Nirmal Thacker Praveen A Ramkrishna Reddy Parag Nemade Zabil CM Sweekar Pinto Sajith T S Nitin Numar Laxminarayan Kamath Shivanand V Edrami Abhas Abhinav Rakesh Ambati
Many thanks to Laxminarayan for typing this in. I've left out the phone numbers here since this will be publically archived on the Internet... Can mail that to all of us privately.
Further actions ---------------
1. Identify time and date for the BMSCE meeting. I think we were planning for Saturday. But there seems to be a BLUG meeting. Do we still want to hold it parallelly or should we postpone our meet to Sunday or next weekend? Or even mid week sometime. Any other venues that could accomodate all of us?
2. We need a discussion list of some sort. Any suggestions? How about a gnu.org.in mailing list? Currently, everyone is subscribed to the FSUG-Bangalore mailing list and we can continue our discussion here.
Fellows - please do build up on this email... I'm sorry if I did not cover everything.
Cheers, Abhas.

I have pointed my bittorrent client to the GPLv3 FSF tracker for over 3 hours now. There is certainly something wrong with it. Shall try other sources over the next few days. Just in case someone already have a copy of the videos lying around please do let me know.
Its always better to learn about the GPLv3 draft from the creators.

Well, we can grass (both legal, green ones and illegal too) anytime if you got a master conjurer like me, but what we need are herds of GNU heads (Except those rogues bulls who stump about as if they are in heat)

I have spoken to Nirmal who is away from Bangalore and he would back on this Saturday (4 th March) and abhas who accept to give the talk will also be out of town this sunday.
So, What shall we do. Do we have another speaker who can give the talk on sunday or shall we postpone the event to another weekend or weekday (after 5th March).
Please suggest your ideas.

It would have been great to have Abhas this weekend.
Now we have two choices
1. Get another speaker for this weekend 2. Wait till Abhas come back
I would love to see choice 1 happening
Is Anand Babu in Bangalore ? (Someone mensioned he will be in Bangalore last time). Or can we think of anyone to talk on GPL?
If this fails then naturally select a date that is convenient for Abhas. We will have it in the evening. How about 6pm next wed 8th March?

Ok, I agree it would great if we can do something this weekend. At least if we can't have a talk we can meet up at someplace. I would be at BFS film screenings on 4th and 5th (around 6:30) in Bahadi House in bangalore central. You (and everyone else) are most welcome to meet me their for cup of coffee and watching a movie.

On other/related presentation of interest:
A discussion/presentation of visualization of money/talent/resource flow using a typical (say US) corporate license and a generalization of this to non-software products might be useful.
Also a discussion on: IP, patent, trade mark, also geographic indicators and software patents in a fast changing tech world
Guess many people know of trivial software patents: For an analysis of Microsft's attempt to patent the inequality operator. www.cwi.nl/~paulk/patents/isnot.pdf By the way, they already have a patent on the Y-axis!

Good suggestions, dinesh.
Like most I myself not aware of Geographic Indicators (IG) and Trade Mark, Intellectual Property rights issues. Before we can have a discussion we should like to know more about them. Would you be interested in giving a talk and leading a panel discussion at some future event.

Sure. Either of these activities. I have not given a "talk" on this yet. I have done an interactive workshop to a group of students and we all enjoyed it.

Great, Let's see what we can cook up. Am still scouting for colleges wherein we can have future events also.
Anybody from colleges (apart from BMS) would like to host any event. Perhaps I should first check if any exam are coming up.

Hi Nirmal
Welcome back Nirmal, hope you had good vacation in Hyderabad. I heard that it was already very hot over there.
Praveen and me met at the Bangalore Film society screening this evening (4 Saturday) in Bahami house. And we thought that it better to conduct the event on ta weekend. What do you say folks.
So, please kindly check if we can have an event either on Wednesday ( 8th March) evening or on the weekend (11th march).

hey arky,
hyderabad was hot, but the place is really booming, i must say. bangalore has to wake up soon! ( the coffee's getting cold and its almost lunch!)
i ll try for the weekend , ie: 11th . it would be suitable... let me know about the following asap:
- do you need a class or auditorium? or tell me the total audience you are targetting (50, 100, 200?) - do you need a projector?
i suggest you guys start off with hands-on-labs. you can have several advantages:
- you'll get the right audience for the right material. no compromises there. that would mean no one is dissatisfied. - you can make some money. microsoft charges about 60 to 100 rs per person. students are ready to shell out a few bucks to learn stuff in an hour - your popularity graph will rise exponentially!...seriously it will...
thats that.... let me know the details fast!
keep the inspiration alive...

That's great, I was born near hyderabad and left before Information Technology companies (we had Satyam, TCS and couple of others) start setting up offices there, it was mostly body shopping those days.
Well, I don't really side in with one city over another. We need uniform growth of our countries economy and concentration of software industry in single location is really bad. Bangalore hasn't able to scale to support the growing population and companies can not sustain the extremely high overhead and attrition rates in Bangalore.

We may have >= 25-30 people from FCI/Blug/FSUG coming and the students of the BMS (What is your estimation guys?)
Hmm, it would be great if the college has one and can lend us or else I have to scout for someone who has one.
i suggest you guys start off with hands-on-labs. you can have several advantages:
Few years back I had proposed an idea of having a weekend GNU(s) Grazing tech meet, where in people can bring their computers and experienced users can help them out.And people can present their latest cool hacks and perhaps play NetHack or some games.
Yes having a hands-on workshop really good. Personally am working on developing an XML training program (consisting of five or six lectures) that I would take to different colleges here in banglore and hyderabad (couple of other places in AP).
At the moments there isn't must interest in Semantic Web and Web Standards here in Bangalore. But in few years we are gonna see companies requiring programs to follow Web Standards from Interface design to Business services based on XML.
Nirmal, there are lot of thing we can do. Let start doing one at a time and now lets get the show going ;o)
Cheers
