ISDN TA Configuration on Linux

hi, i am having trouble configuring an ISDN TA (Zyxel -omni.net) on RedHat 7.2. i tried adding an ISDN Device from the redhat network configuration but ZyXEL does not show up in the list of devices there.Is there any way of doing it manually. i would be extremely greatful to anyone who could help me out with this. regards, Dinesh Singh __________________________________________________________ Give your Company an email address like ravi @ ravi-exports.com. Why bash invokes child to execute script.

$ps bash ps If I rum a simple shell script, the bash above, doesn't execute it. It invokes another bash process only for the execution of this script. Why? Regards, Nikhil.

Hi nikhil, Flex and bison have superseded lex and yacc respectively. As flex and bison are compatible with the syntax of lex and yacc, any program written for lex or yacc will run in flex and bison. I did write a small compiler/translator in flex and bison and did not encounter any major differences. qmail help needed

Hi, I am using qmail as the MTA that serves 200 users. On an average 1500 mails and sent and 1500 received everyday on a 64K leased line. However there is a problem here. Due to insufficient and sometimes intermittent bandwidth, the qmail queue increases a lot especially if a certain mail is huge in size. Due to this, qmail defers delivery of local mails. All qmail processes seem to go to sleep. Though qmail accepts SMTP and POP connections during this time, it fails to deliver mails destined for the local domain. This results in the foll. message when I run 'qmailctl queue' : Messages in queue : 100 Messages in queue but not yet preprocessed: 134 After some time interval of 15 mins or so, suddenly all qmail process awake and the mail delivery begins. I have no problem with delay in outgoing mails but I do not want local mails to be deferred. This is extremely irritating to the users. Can someone tell me the reason for this and the solution? Report on Workshop at Fr. CRCE

I am posting the report on the Workshop held at Fr. CRCE Bandra on the 12th and 13th of October, 2002. The report was written by Harsh Busa. The same will be put up on the db.ilug-bom.org.in website. Philip 2 Days @ Fr CRCE: Linux Workshop Report on Linux Workshop conducted at Fr. Conceciao Rodrigues College of Engineering, Bandra. Speakers: (all from Ilug-bom) Dr. G. Nagarjuna Mr. Dinesh Shah Mr. Philip S Tellis Mr. Harsh Busa Introduction: In late September, Philip was approached by Professor Shubhangi Deshmukh, of Fr. CRCE, Bandra, to organise a workshop on linux for the students of their college. Further coordination was with Mr. Aliasgar Dahodwala, a final year BE student. After a few discussions with Lug members, four persons volunteered to speak at the workshop. The workshop was to be held across two days, the 12th and 13th of October, 2002. The following schedule was drawn up with reference to topics suggested by the students, speaker expertise, and convenience of the speakers. Day 1, Morning Session: - Basic linux terminal commands - Harsh Busa - Loadable modules in the linux kernel - Philip - C Programming using Autotools - Philip - Short intro to perl - if time - Philip Day 1, Afternoon session: - Kernel compilation - Dinesh - Description of the /proc file system - Philip - Shell programming - Harsh If time permits, add vi and emacs here. Day 2, Morning Session: - Distinction between *nix and non-unix - Nagarjun - Linux File Structure - Nagarjuna or Harsh - File manipulation in Linux - Harsh Afternoon Session: - apache and samba configuration - Dinesh or Nagarjuna - configuring modem/sound/graphics/etc. - Dinesh or Nagarjuna Day 1: The first day started of nearly an hour late as the venue had to be shifted at the last moment from the Seminar Hall to a Classroom. In our opinion, this may have been a blessing as the classroom was smaller, and our voices could reach everyone without much straining. The topics gave speakers a general impression that the participants had some kind of familiarity with linux. We were also informed that the college had recently conducted a linux worshop before it and use it regularly for lab purpose. The opening poll suggested the otherwise. Except for a few final year and third year participants most were new to the concept of linux. This called for a prompt shift in focus, from Advanced Topics down to Creating Literacy and Awareness Harsh started out the first session, trying to touch upon basic filesystem stucture and commands. The session lasted around 90 minutes. Philip took over towards the end, introducing regular expressions using grep. [ed's note: my last regex lecture was 3 hours, this one was 30 minutes. I think they learnt much more this time.] It was decided at this point to postpone, or maybe even omit the concept of modular kernels. After the lunch break the session Shell Scripting was pushed up as it turned out that Philip's presentation on autotools was missing (specifically, the web directory in which the presentation was kept did not have read permissions). Harsh took up basic bash programming covering variables, expressions, conditions and loop structures. This was followed by a few simple examples suggested by members of the audience. Following this Philip took up the topic of AutoTools for writing C programs. We thought that it would be interesting to many, but without the slides, and with few people having been through the configure, make, make install process, it was too abstract for most. Some found it interesting but many seemed to be getting bored. It was already about 4 in the evening so it was time to wind up theory and let people try out some stuff for themselves. The exercise had 4 shell scripts: - Prime Numbers - Calculator - cp/mv/rm with more options / Interactive - Word Filter using grep. The day was dispersed without Dinesh getting to speak about Kernel Compilation and Philip unable to cover /proc, Loadable Kernel modules and Perl. Day 2: The second day started of on a rather positive note it was only 15mins off the schedule. The session was already reorganised by Dr. Nagarjuna looking at the previous day's experince. More time was given to speaking about Why Linux, its roots, the philosophy behind the free software foundation and what distinguishes POSIX ish OS from other OSes. This took around 90-100 mins and then before turning to the lab Dr. Nagarjuna gave a short preamble to EMACS which he then covered more extensively in the labs. It was decided to cut out the File Manipulation topic since people were already using VI and it would leave little time for other topics. Following the post lunch session Dinesh ran through the need for a customised kernel and then spoke about various aspects of selecting components for a custom kernel, various ways of compiling the kernel on shell and X both. Following this Dr. Nagarjuna demonstrated a Debian installation and explained various aspects of its several steps including adding modules to the system with apt-get and then towards the end samba and apache configuration. The speakers took some questions while the installion was going on. By the end of everything people too tired even to ask questions and simply wanted to rush home. Schedule: Finally, the schedule of what actually happened. Day 1, Morning Session: - Linux File Structure - Harsh - Basic linux terminal commands - Harsh Busa - grep - Philip Day 1, Afternoon session: - Shell programming - Harsh - C Programming using Autotools - Philip - Lab Day 2, Morning Session: - Distinction between *nix and non-unix - Nagarjun - Philosphy of Opensource and Free S/W - Nagarjun Afternoon Session: - Kernel compilation - Dinesh - Installing a typical Debian System - Nagarjun - apache and samba configuration - Dinesh or Nagarjuna Endnote: The organisers and the staff, everyone was very hospitable and lunch also quite nice. Though the sessions were interesting but quite randomly laid down topics and the vast spectrum of audience made it very difficult to satisfy everyone. It would have been better if the topics were selected keeping the audience and time in mind. The sessions were too short to do complete justice to the topic yet too long for the audiance to digest everything. It would be better if students internally cover some initial awareness sessions themselves and then have special topics arranged on weekends with a very definite topic in mind. Going by public demand often leads no one anywhere. If so many topics need to be covered well, then they should be spread over several days. or else simply have a separate beginner's workshop and then an advanced system admin or programming.

Redhat Linux 8.0 and problems therein

Hello. At the outset I would like to tell you that I am a novice in Linux and don't know much. I have always treated Linux as an experimental OS to fool around with, because it is not very user friendly and the main problem of MS software is that they are very expensive. But here in Bombay, India that problem gets solved due to blatant software piracy which helps users like me use the amazingly high priced software at down to earth prices. Anyway before I started fooling around with Redhat Linux 8.0, I had no idea what "making" meant and how it had to be done. I am not a programmer!!. I installed Redhat Linux 8.0 from the CDs and it got stuck at the installation screen itself. I have the following hardware :- Compaq Presario 7000A4 PIII 933 MHz 256 MB RAM Riva TNT II with 32 MB RAM Hda with 30 GB Win2k ntfs Hdb with 10 GB > Hdb1 Linux main > hdb5 Linux swap > hdb6 msdos USB keyboard Compaq internet keyboard PS/2 mouse and some Firewire hardware for Digital camera (I think). DVD drive and internal modem (Conexant HCF) The Installation failed to get my USB keyboard and it kept waiting for an input. No failsafe mechanisms !! Luckily I had an old simple keyboard which came in handy, and helped us install the damn software. Then after booting it again I realised it recognised my USB keyboard down to the vendor etc but could not use it for some stupid reason.It gave the following error about a zillion times during kernel startup >> usb_control/bulk_msg: timeout Also it recognised my modem but again could not find it by software detect from pppd. So I went about searching the net high and low to get a solution, but to no avail. Thanks to Mr.Michael Fischer ,Professor of Computer Science @Yale who had a similar problem with his HP USB keyboard and as per his suggestion, I got the new kernel source for 2.4.19 (bloody 30MB download over a dialup) and then also the patch file to 2.4.20-pre10. It worked!!! << I had to learn how to patch the kernel source, and also how to make the damn kernel itself. Painful experience I must say..>> To the new kernel, I added NTFS support. (Redhat has something against NTFS support, it doesn't compile it into the kernel by default). And reduced the size by removing unnecessary hardware support from 1.1 MB to 780 KB. WoW !! I worked out a way in which USB keyboard was used in HID Boot Protocol method. Simply edit your /etc/modules.conf to read alias usb-controller usbkbd ........instead of alias usb-controller usb-uhci. This loaded the usbkbd.o file (u have to "make" it through the .config file inside the kernel making factory by activating CONFIG_USB_KBD=m). It worked perfectly and doesn't give any more errors regarding timeouts.. I then went on to download the hcfpcimodem-0.98mbsibeta02090200-1.i386.rpm binary RPM for my Conexant HCF internal modem from mbsi.com. Thanks Mark Boucher for the great software !! After installation it asks you to run a script called hcfpciconfig which not only configures your modem but also figures out if you are using a kernel which it will have to compile a modem driver for !! Great.. And it did just that for my kernel 2.4.20-pre10custom version. And automatically configured it too.. So now I have the keyboard, NTFS support and modem working perfectly. Long way for Redhat to go before they can compare to the likes of Apple and Microsoft. I wonder why anybody would even remotely think of comparing Linux at this stage to MS products or even MacOS?? I'd say it would take another 5-7 years before they can catch up to what other OSes are today. Thanks everybody for all the amazing help provided online today and in the past which helps novices like me to get our systems working.. thanks a lot.. It goes to the folder /usr/src/linux-2.4.19 etc. If you want to patch >> download patch and extract it to /usr/src folder. Use patch -p0 < patch file name. Then use the graphical utility "make xconfig" is the command, or simply go to control center > system tools > kernel config. Alter the source path to whatever your version of kernel is. If you want to use the old .config file for safety sake, pull it out of the default kernel source (e.g.: Redhat 8.0 CD has kernel 2.4.18-14. /usr/src/linux-2.4.18-14/.config is the file) or you may find it at /boot/config-2.4.18-14. Always save the original file to some safe place because you always tend to "make" mistakes(pun intended here). Alter the file, for your system and add whatever you want, delete hardware support etc. Now use the following commands to MAKE the kernel in the directory /usr/src/linux-urversion:- make symlinks dep >> computes dependencies. make clean >> Housekeeping operation make bzImage >> makes the kernel make modules >> Module factory at work make modules_install >> relocating modules to work perfectly make install >> relocating your kernel files to work.. PLEASE READ THE REDHAT LINUX DOCUMENTATION THAT COMES ALONG WITH THE INSTALLATION CDs BEFORE YOU DO ALL THIS. File to read file:///mnt/cdrom/RH-DOCS/rhl-cg-en-8.0/s1-custom-kernel.html or so. Search engine keywords :- REDHAT LINUX 8.0, Psyche 8.0, kernel 2.4.18-14, 2.4.19, patching kernel source, making a kernel, keyboard USB, Compaq internet keyboard, usbkbd.o, HID Boot protocol, Conexant HCF and HSF internal modems.

RE: sm56 on red hat ....

SM56 is a Winmodem and cannot be detected by Linux. To use it you have to install a file (given in PCQuest July 2001 CD). I followed the steps given in the magazine and will run through them quickly. insert the second CD and go to /mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS do # rpm -Uvh sm56-85.1-10.i386.rpm then # sm56setup 852 to check if everything is up and running load the driver. # modprobe sm56 # dmesg your modem will be installed in /dev/modem which points to /mnt/sm56 Configure your internet connection using Kppp etc. and start surfing :) If you need more help goto http://linmodems.org or write to SM56LinuxSupport(a)motorola.com -----Original Message----- From: kedar sapre [mailto:kedarsapre@vsnl.net] I am trying it to configure for my RH 7.2 box , but it damn not working .... [ILUG-BOM][OT] CD Writer

Hi, I am about to get a Cd Writer. I would like to have opinions from people on the list about the best option for me. I would most likely go for an internal IDE device ... with a budget of about Rs. 4500/- And of course it has to work with Linux ... which I believe should not be an issue anymore. Hi Rupesh.. I only want to say you thanks.. :) I try for such a long time to resolv some problem with my new adsl connection but linux red hat don't give the right routing... and finally I found your post: http://mm.ilug-bom.org.in/pipermail/linuxers/Week-of-Mon-20020729/005635.htm l and it resolv all my problem ! :) Xelon.It is now on my own web-server... sorry for the bad english but I'm an italian boy..
