I have the DSL399 conn via ethernet.
I am running Ubuntu 5.04.
I have trouble configuring the connection.
The problem is that once upon a time i had used a modem and Ubuntu still
considers the modem as the default and does not remember the settings
for the ethernet conn.
I have configured & activated the ethernet conn umpteen times and
disabled the modem conn as many times.
Pl help.
Because of this I have to use XP instead of practising shell scripts (I
am 2 mths old int the world of Linux and loving it).
Regards,
Mohan S N
P.S.: The MTNL tech support is of no avail as the troll who services my
area cannot tell between internet and ethernet . He is lost searching
for 'ethernet explorer' if I delete the dsk shortcut to IE.

I choose FC4's full installation option and removed localization and
internalization stuff. But FC4 is not installing all the packages. For
example anaconda is not instilling Swat. Is it bug with FC4?
Thank you

Hi Gopi,
You have not mentioned which modem you are using , However you can get connected to the net by going to your shell commandline and do the following
1) Create a file by giving the following
# touch /etc/wvdial.conf
2) Next to detect your modem you can use the wvdial commandline tool # wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf
3) This will detect your modem , then go to the file you created that is by typing # vi /etc/wvdial.conf
4) In thgis file all you need to enter is you tata username and password , also you need to type in the phone number, save the file.
5) Next you need to type the following command
# wvdial
The Wvdial tool does detect your port and connection for you as mentioned above all you have to do is type the username / password /phone number given by tata
All The Best
Thanks And Regards

Not neccessary to have dhcp. U can have a static ip on your nic.
I have ordered a triband connection with dsl 499 nu plan. Let see
how it pans out. My experience with two other triband connections
has been excellent so far. Down time has been near zero - last outage
during MSEB megatrip. Although the adsl signal led indicated adsl ok
there was no connection. A modem warm boot sorted the problem.
In contrast tata adsl 128kbps unlimited service is erratic, with access
slower than a dialup quite often.
