Hello,
Nowadays there is a new trend among schools in Mumbai, to install
electronic interactive black boards in classrooms. This concept is being
marketed in a crazy way and there appears to be a race to install one
everywhere. Marketing persons are convincing the school authorities that
this is the only way to teach and will also help students that have
learning difficulties. The systems run on Windows and teachers are being
encouraged to do everything in MS Power Point slide shows by creating
them every day. Another interesting thing is that they have a server
installed where teachers must upload all their teaching material so it
is commonly available to everyone. It appears that the hardware will be
sold to the schools and the data made by the teachers may get used for
marketing.
My question is that how much computing is needed in teaching today?
Apart from showing educational films and slide shows in the auditorium,
what more can be done in class using a computer?

On my Ubuntu 11.04 install on laptop (amd64 arch) as well as desktop (x86
arch) on the office wired LAN (Intranet, not connected to internet), there
is a constant 6-15 kilobytes/second data down happening. The LAN works
normally at all times, but even with no activity this data down is running.
I checked with internet connected wifi on laptop and a USB dongle on both,
but there was no such data transfer in idle conditions. It doesn't happen
when on Windows 7.
Is there a tool to find out which port or software is taking this data? I
tried netstat but couldn't make a headway. Searched on ubuntuforums but
found nothing close enough. Can somebody please guide me how to go about it.

*Free or open source for students?*
Vasudha Venugopal
CHENNAI: Recent discussions on which software package to be incorporated in
the free laptops to be distributed to students this year in Tamil Nadu have
highlighted the attempts across the country to promote the use of Free and
Open Source Software in education and other fields.
While the government's tender specifications call for dual-booted laptops
offering the Windows starter edition and Linux (Tamil version), activists
say it must be only an open source.
An oft-cited example is the IT@School project, started by the Kerala
government in 2003. “We had both Windows and Linux initially, but we
migrated to the open source completely in 2008,” says K Anvar Sadath,
executive director of the project.
While Swecha of Andhra Pradesh is also striving to train students and
teachers in free software, Assam, Punjab and Haryana have started using open
source software in education.
It is unfortunate that while in the West, the dependence on proprietary
software is decreasing, the developing countries are giving in to predatory
marketing tactics, says Atul Chitnis, consulting technologist and founder,
FOSS.In.
Training of teachers can go on simultaneously, says Mr. Anvar, recalling his
experience of training more than 10,000 teachers in a month through
videoconferencing facilitated by the open source environment.
Now Kerala has 600 open source learning centres across 14 districts,
offering specialised training in animation, graphics and multimedia on open
source technologies, apart from regular education.
Gurumurthy Kasinathan of the Bangalore-based IT for Change says: “Many free
educational software applications, bundled with Ubuntu GNU/Linux, are
powerful in helping teachers and students understand concepts in math,
science and social sciences.”
S. Shanu, convener of the Free Software Foundation, Tamil Nadu, says
linguistic flexibility is a big advantage of free software. The culture of
innovation and community-based support systems can transform the way
students think. Some industry professionals and government officials cite
authentication, warranty and access as reasons for preferring proprietary
software to open source technologies. “If you want to buy a proprietary
system, you pick up one, but how many local directories tell you what to do
if you need open source software. Heterogeneous environments of companies
train us to choose the best tool for the job, considering compatibility with
specialised applications and vendor support,” says Suresh Ramanujan, a
software consultant.
However, academics feel, it is the flexibility to understand the logic of
the software that an open source offers, which is the key. “The question is
what kind of learning process are we encouraging among students, and not if
we should let them decide on their own, says Pratap Reddy, Chairman, Board
of Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru Technical University.
The stack of free software for school education is so huge that it does not
need a learning management system or specially designed tools for building
it, say experts.

Scaling PHP in the Cloud is a one day conference on the challenges of
scaling up from a single-server to multi-server software development
model. It is an event for hands-on programmers, with sessions
conducted by other programmers on how they do it. Our leading sessions
are from Flipkart on how they write and deploy software on the
hundreds of machines that power their e-commerce website; Zynga on
their use of Membase; MobStac on how you can use Amazon EC2 to scale;
and a number of other notable developers from the community.
The event is on July 9 at Dharmaram College, Christ University Campus,
Dairy Circle, Bangalore.
Event website: http://phpcloud.hasgeek.in/
Session proposals: http://funnel.hasgeek.in/phpcloud/
Tickets: http://phpcloud.doattend.com/
Tickets are Rs 800 online and Rs 900 at venue. Early bird pricing has
expired, but you can still get tickets at a lower price if you team up
with your friends and buy together (3 or more tickets; even lower with
6+).
We are a participant-supported event, by developers, for developers,
with no sponsor interference. Your ticket money makes this possible.
At this event, you get to choose the sessions you want. The schedule
was made on the basis of sessions voted up by the community, and we've
still got a few spots open for anyone who wants to come up and speak.
Part of the ticket price goes to the cost of spreading word about the
event. If you can help by telling your friends and buying your ticket
with them, we'll give you a nice discount on the total price.

Namaste,
I am trying to use my MTS mblaze netconnect with my Fedora 14. The
modeswitching takes place automatically. I don't have to manually use the
modeswitch command to switch the mode from storage device to modem.
The problem starts after that. When I allow the network manager to connect
to the internet automatically, it shows connected and also assigns an ip
address to my computer. It also adds the default nameservers in
/etc/resolv.conf but I am not able to ping www.google.com or 8.8.8.8. Then I
changed the nameservers to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. and tried pinging again. It
failed.
Next I tried using wvdial. The device connects, but again I am unable to
ping and the modem shuts down automatically after 2 minutes or so.
I starting reading more about this and realized that the wvdial is nothing
but a heuristic frontend that uses the chat(08) program. I think writing the
chat script should solve my problem, but the problem is that to write the
chat script I will need specs of how this particular modem works. The modem
is identified as ONDA systems communications device after typing lsusb in
the shell and the manufacturer is ZTE. If anyone have access to these specs
or if anyone has experience in hacking or reverse-engineering their protocol
please help.
