Some of the ideas that came up while thinking about Marathi Linux
There are 3 levels of work in Marathi-isation
1> Applications like office software: Free softwares like
a>StarOffice , which are quite a good substitute for MS-Office and
available in Linux :
b> GIS softwares like GRASS or MYWorld useful for urgent problms
like water and environment
c> educational softwares Like LOGO, STARLOGO, Model-It,
Worldwatcher, DrGenius
We need to translate the labels and messages and documentations and
tutorials, multi-lingual CDs with multimedia.
2>Creating application in Marathi: Using gtk, glade emacs etc.
3> Working at the OS level : Creating labels/message table in marathi.
NCST has already done a large part for Hindi, some in Marathi too.
We also need to create mass awereness thru newspaper article in all the
press.
We should ask our local cybercafe to have marathi software loaded.
AKRUTI have agrred to support anyone helping. Similarly other Marathi
and Indian language developers can be asked to make offers. This would
make the idea of working in Indian language a day-to-day affair without
too much cost.

Hi!
I've found that there is a cult following as far as mail agents and
editors are concerned.
A guy who uses vi rearely uses emacs and vice versa also a guy who uses
mutt rarely uses pine or any other mail agent.
I would like to discuss about mail agent here (I use vi and I love it ;)
I use pine and it suffices most of my needs.
Has anyone used both pine and mutt extensively?
What in your opinon is more powerful and user friendly?
when I enter mutt the inital UI is not inviting and I'm forced to press
the q key :)
I've read that mutt relies on .rc file editing.
I'm planning to learn mutt but I just don't want to be disappointed if I
figure out that there ain't much difference between pine and mutt.

I was suggested to read Mastering Regular Expressions by Jeffery Friedl. I am
told it is _the_ book to read for regex. When I enquired w/ my bookwalla, he
told me that he was told it would have o be oredered from abroad and would
cost ~ Rs. 1300/-. And no, I don't think he is trying to rip me off. It's
also not available at the roadside booksellers at Fountain.
Does anyone have this book with him ? I would like to first take a look at it
before I commit to pay for it.
regards,
Sharukh.

Plz tell me where I'm wrong:
Linux is open source --> The Code which encrypts the login password is
freely available --> A Baddie looks at the code and finds out the
algorithm --> cat /etc/passwd | grep root --> Voila! the baddie has root
password.
Of course this does not happen
How does Linux manage to be secure inspite of being open source?

Does anyone have compiled 2.4 series kernel to produce NTFS driver???
Could you mail it to me or otherwise tell me where I can get it.
I tried google, but no use. Didn't find any precompiled driver.
I need it badly.
I need to transfer some project files from NTFS to Linux.
I tried compiling the kernel, but it is giving some stupid problems.
I'm using RH 7.1. I think, this topic of kernel not getting compiled properly was discussed earlier as well.
Thanks in advance,

"not feasible for most" is a gross understatement.
The MD5 hash is 128 bits long. This means that there are
340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,456 values. This means
that even if you could try a TRILLION combinations a second it would
take you 10,790,283,070,806,014,188 years to break!
A brute force attack against MD5 won't work.
We are a group of students and teachers in engg college and want to work towrda
indianising gnu/Linux.
We aim at doing whatevr it takes to do it.
We have no great expertise but are seeking some. We would like to set up a site for
the availble resources and strt identifying small tasks and get them to be done.
We would like to keep track of status and progress as is done by gnu project on
translations for across the world. I do not find mention of indian languages on the
gnu site which is a sad (if not shameful) fact.
This is the time for all those who want to join to come up with help. All kind of
help.
We would like to meet some time. We have a coordinator , the undersigned .
Can ilug host (give web-space) such a site or has one already?
We aim at NOT restricting to geeks and only technical work but also get the
translations of important packages and involve general public .
We need to answer a few technical questions though.
1> so long as many people have only windows (MS!) they may have to use their
software for editing files in indian languages. What standard(UNICODE, ISCII, ISO?)
should be followed and using which free software to create strings , .po files,
.pot files. yudit, sbabel or what? Are these available in windows with
devnagari.Even if this is not perfect can we ensure that the same may be
convertible and improved. Or is it necessary for us to wait for miracle of perfect
solution and availability of linux all around.
2> what programs would be needed to partially automate the translations. Many are
floating around. Can some geek take up the challenge and give a comparative picture
for us to use. Also give a small tutorial.?
3> We want to start with marathi. The lessons and tools will be useful for all
other languages. Who are the others in this field.

Should I add if you do not consider luck factor and few assumptions
on length of password, starting and ending characters of password.
Which is not tough to find out in case you are in close vicinity of
an administrator.
