hi,
is there a way i can use a device blocked by one program, if
required by another prog.? the situation is like this, i am running
skype on linux and at the same time i want to play xmms for some
songs, (i can do it in windows, skype and winamp together so i hear
the person as well as some music in backgrond.)
to my knowledge i dont think its possible in linux, but just
wanting to wish the i am wrong ;-)
I find both YUM and Pirut quite slow as compared to APT and Synaptic.
I don't think this has anything to do with my Internet connection,
since I have used APT (and Synaptic) on the very same machine and
connection as YUM and Pirut. Is this really an issue with YUM?

Debarshi

Dear Anurag and List Admins,
Based on your statement below:-
"List Members,
Please keep the focus of your mails on linux and related
technologies, and do not post replies to potential trouble makers."
Could you please clarify more on the term `related technologies' with
reference to linux or FOSS?
Does any new idea or concept for any technology that has a potential use
of Linux or FOSS in the future come under this category?
Why is the presenter of such ideas being branded as a trouble maker? If
the list members break rules and post anti-Govt. or communal replies,
why is the OP being punished for it. Tomorrow if an on-topic discussion
diverts into such replies, will the OP still be held responsible for
that?
My observation of this list as well as the general attitude of Indians
towards scientific development is that we are not cut out to develop new
technologies or inventions. We are destined to be slaves and coolies of
technologies that are handed down to us by our foreign masters.
Regards,
Rony.

Hi list,
I am currently learning neural networks as a hobby. I would like to
implement them in C and on Linux. I have googled around and there seems
to be immense data on them yet its all theoretical. I am currently
learning the BPN algorithm whose logic I am able to understand but the
math is a bit tough. I would like to know if there is/are some book /
website / white papers which talk about Neural Networks from
implementation / performance point of view. Oh yes, it would be great
help if the math is explained in simpler terms :)
I've gotten links / pdfs if anybody is interested I can post them here
( not PDFs ofcourse ).
Thanks.

Want to buy a "budget" laptop. The CPU choices are AMD
Mobile Sempron 3000+ (1.8GHz, 128K L2 cache) and Intel
Mobile Celeron (1.6GHz, 1MB L2 cache).
Given resp. units have 512MB system RAM (w/ 128M for video)
and comparable HDD, which CPU is likely to give better
performance?
TIA.

Hi everyone,
I am trying to extract meta data from various file formats, viz JPEG, BMP,
GIF, PSD and AVI, MPEG and MP3.
I was trying to look for a generic library which would support all (or most)
of the given file formats. The only library(C/C++) I could find was
libextractor but I couldn't use it because I want it to work on both
platforms.
Thus,
For MP3 i am using id3lib and for JPEG exiv2lib. I would be grateful if
anyone could point me to libraries which extract metadata from the other
file formats (viz BMP, GIF, PSD and AVI, MPEG).
TIA,
Regards,
aj

Hello guys,
We wish to implement our project in python as it is one of the most robust open programming language. So can you give us some guidelines from where we can start our learning. We have got our hands on two books
1) Learning Python - O'reilly Pub (Lot of theoratical stuff)
2) Python Complete Refrence - (again lot of theory).
Since we have good experience with programming, it would be great if we can start with Python coding directly. Any pointers ?
regards
Sameer
