FOSS profit

Hi all, Maybe I'm asking another noob question. But, wanted to know, how the big companies gain profit who run Free and Open Source project like Mozilla, Apache, etc. Of course, even if you are working for Free and Open source projects, there has to be some income. Fwd: command to get description of packages listed in a file

Hi all Is there any easy way to get the description of all packages listed in a file which contains the names of all such packages? eg. i used sudo dpkg --get-selections >installed-software to make a list of all installed software packages on my system However I want to remove some of them in batch mode (from the command line) instead of by using synaptic and deleting them one by one which is a cumbersome process. So the description of such packages is needed in another file containing a subset of names of packages likely to be removed. How can this be done ? Kussh

Seeking: Scanners compatible with FOSS OCR , application for building Contacts database

I propose to purchase a scanner and also use the same , among other things, for reading Business cards of contacts to build a database. My query 1. Can I assume that using any scanner I can get pdf files and the same can be OCRed ( using pdfocr script which uses Cnueiform ) 2. Are there any scanners I should avoid 3. Any experience or Contra-indication against Canon LiDE 100 . 4. Any application that reads the business cards and intelligently (or interactively) give parsed data from business card 5. A suggestion

Greetings, We see a lot of professionals and SMBs who are member of this list. I was wondering if we all can form a sort of service network of professional for various solutions using open/mixed source. Any person/organisation with skills/knowledge on FLOSS/Hweterogenous/Others can be a member. We cannot ignore the "other"/"Proprietery" completely as they are entrenched in the various verticals. Please bear with me. I have dedicated last five years of my bread and butter earning career to FLOSS solutions but have difficulty in gaining traction in the enterprises working alone. Of course there are commercials involved. Which can be discussed threadbare. Perhaps another list for that. I was having a "Single window Solutions" in mind wherein the members/prospective customers can pick and choose services they want. Modalities/details can be worked out. ODBC version on Linux

List, Oracle is installed on a Linux Server. I have been trying to find out the version number of odbc installed on the server. However, I am not able to find odbc manager to find out the version of the driver(s) installed. I have tried searching the web, but cannot find a definitive answer. Can somebody help me / direct me as to where I should be looking? -- Roshan Baladhanvi
