Creating opportunities for Linux imlementations

Friends, We have been making various attempts to create opportunities for Linux deployments and have met with mixed successes. Recently, thinking that RTI can be used as a tool for entering the Government sector, we used this tool and have stopped/postponed one implementation, where we feel Linux can be the option, whereas the user has opted for win$ only. We feel that a small group, what is also called a "special interest group" could be created that can take up this activity strongly. After the RTI is filed and the response received, there is need of a follow-up that would involve technical expertise, which the members of this group can provide and this activity can then move forward. If there is interest in it, please get in touch with me. I am at Delhi and the first case we have got is in delhi itself. Due to legal reasons, its good not to take the name here at this stage, but, this can be a very good beginning for Linux entering into areas that are kept away from it by the "smart fellows" (actually, we may better called them bribed fellows). This activity, can not only give a good name to the LUGs but also make a real difference in the environment. There may be soon the need of filing cases and taking the matter to a level where the decible level of sound about Linux can grow real big, for the environment to notice it in a very interesting manner. Once we do some tests at one location, then they can replicated all across the country. RTI can be very interesting for this. With best wishes for Unity in thinking, feeling and action. Hi all, what is the state of gprs /edge performance. a few months ago i tried out airtel gprs and it was pathetic to say the least. The CDMA usb modem from tata is about tolerable Basically Schuyler Erle one of the freemap faculty would like to obtain a connection when he is India. Rgds JTD

Invitation to FOSS Meet@NITC 2008

Linuxers, We are pleased to inform you that National Institute of Technology, Calicut will be hosting its annual free and open source software conference, namely FOSS Meet @ NITC 2008, on 28th, 29th and 30th of March 2008. This time the focus of the event is to get more students actively involved in FOSS. As usual, there will be talks, BOFs, workshops etc. - details of which will soon be put up on our website – http://www.fossmeet.in/nitc . In addition to that, this year, we are starting a contest called FOSSDev, to promote student participation in and contribution to FOSS. Basically, a team wishing to participate has to find a mentor who will help them contribute to a project of the participant's choice. FOSSDev is a year long event. There will be three "checkpoints" at which progress will be evaluated and prizes will be given accordingly. Total prize money is Rs. 23,500. Hello Folks, As a new member to your mailing list, i hereby state, that i am a novice at using linux. But i am well aware of the power it bestows upon us. :)) Anyway, i am an _Animator_ and would like to know, which would be the best Distro for running Autodesk Maya ?
