Nice try Dinesh. But whether you will get through
at all to KK is doubtful. In my last interaction
with him, he strongly reminded me of Humpty
Dumpty (a character in "Through the Looking Glass").
Excerpted from here: http://www.sabian.org/Alice/lgchap06.htm :
`But "glory" doesn't mean "a nice knock-down argument",' Alice objected.
`When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said, in
rather a scornful tone, `it means just what I
choose it to mean -- neither more nor less.'
i want create multiple profile on a single linux machine(server class)
so that multiple users can access the it (GUI ) from their client
Server OS is CentOS 5.3
For centralize authentication i am using Fedora directory Services
I also have FreeNX server installed on the Linux Server and FreeNX
client on the windows machines. (for terminal server like
while goggling i got the the below article for creating multiple
profile in linux
Now the situation is that my FreeNX client is not able to authenticate
via my Ldap/FDS Server.
Could someone suggest some better idea for achieving this.
Last year, 2008, the fyjc admission was made online using FOSS.
The software is available for any one for asking.
I was the architect on behalf of the government.
I was instrumental in turning the decision of autorites from not going in
for online to going in for online this year.
That is when my contribution ended.
Last year we used the latest MySQL (5.0) when our engineers had not enough
experience( was that a sensible decision ? I feel yes as it was essentially
a pilot) . It took two days to locate MySQL expert who was familiar with
settings ( Courtesy Dainik Bhaskar) and the dying server revived in 10
While comparing last year with this, one may note the following: (not as
excuses for failures)
We had an entrepreneur to come forward taking no money from the government,
no assurance of students using the system . It was optional. The physical
form filling was alternative. The charges for service was Rs 5 , with
exemption for first two applications.
Instead , this year the centralised admission makes online compulsory for
about 2 lakh students (after discounting the minority seats of about 1.5
Each student has to pay Rs 125/-
The undersigned had offered the services for the govt as honorary.
This time I was called in initial meetings. But later I was dropped.
I may get a call again, I am told.
What is at stake is faith of people in technology in mass usage.
Also whether FOSS can serve better?
Nandan Nilekani is to start the process of issuing every Indian
citizen an identity card.
But are the platform/readers and so on based on open source standards,
such that you
or I can verify that it doesn't have flaws or hidden backdoors which
can be misused?
I couldn't find anything on Google. Anyone has any ideas?
Am going around in circles trying to get to play vcds in ubuntu 9.04.
Have installed vlc , mplayer medibuntu etc but they don't seem to help.
Also have installed the w32codecs, mjpegtools, etc but the story is the
Don't remember how this was done earlier for earlier versions.
Can anybody help please?
1. MuniFOSS: could our BMC learn to do more with less?
"The Munich decision to move its 14,000 desktops to Free Open Source
Software created a big splash back in 2003 as news circulated of the
third-largest German city's defection from Microsoft. When it was
announced in 2003, the story garnered coverage even in the US, such as
an extensive article in USA Today on-line. Currently, about 60% of
desktops are using OpenOffice, with the remaining 40% to be completed
by the end of 2009. Firefox and Thunderbird are being used in all of
the city's desktop machines. Ten percent of desktops are running the
LiMux Debian-based distro, and 80% will be running LiMux by 2012 at the
latest. Autonomy was generally considered more important than cost
savings, although the LiMux initiative is increasing competition in the
IT industry in Munich already. The program has succeeded because the
city administration has been careful to reach out to all stakeholders,
from managers down to simple end users."
Note that the move has taken six years to date: retraining and rejigging processes and applications is not done overnight. In fact, part of the true total cost of proprietary is the expensive conversion effort.
2. Bootless updating: a technology first, with Ubuntu Jaunty
"Ksplice has started offering Ksplice Uptrack for Ubuntu Jaunty, a free
service that delivers rebootless versions of all the latest Ubuntu
kernel security updates. It's currently available for both the 32 and
64-bit generic kernel, and they plan to add support for the virtual and
server kernels by the end of the month, according to their FAQ. This
makes Ubuntu the first OS that doesn't need to be rebooted for security
Anyone having experience with Python (code level) can review the code
and others can test functionality :)

Subject: [fp] Fonty Python 0.4 - Beta test help please
Apologies for the spam on this list. I don't know what to do about it.
I am aiming for a 0.4 release soon and need a spot of help. If you are in the
mood, could you take the latest trunk for a run and let me know what breaks!
Get it fresh by:
svn co svn://svn.sv.gnu.org/fontypython/trunk
(look for version 0.4 -- which might not be there for a few hours yet.)
I need to know:
1. i18n -- still working? Many translations will be broken cos I changed stuff.
2. Functionality. I am suffering "code bleh" -- I can't tell if the app does
what it's supposed-to or not. Just too close to the trees to see the etc.
Have to check a)The command-line b)The Gui c)The help.
3. Bugs. If you use Savannah to report them, please email me a warning too.
Once I get your feedback and fix any bugs, our friendly packager will be
unleashed and FP-0.4 will hit the Universe! :D

Look at this real situation.
What should we do with such terrorists sitting in the educational
On one hand we are facing terrorism from companies like Microsoft which
will play all these dirty games and to help them the other side is our
government where such currupted pimps are sitting to spoil all the
educational system by denying even the basic freedom of choosing a
software as small as a web browser.
