Hi Stop RIP service & just chk weather r getting same internet usage from linux. rgds girish Hi all I use cable modem for my mail seerver on linux Rh 7.0. setup uses squid ,sendmail ,fetchmail and ipchains and RIP. Now question is when i use WinXP For internet sharing only then my internet usage go up to 400MB and when same is replaced by above setup then it goes to 1 gb WHY so much of difference ? and let me know how to reduce this on linux ,all other services on linux r stopped . 2 minor problems after kernel recompilation..

Hi, This is my first post to this mailing list although I have been lurking for a couple of months... I am facing 2 problems with my GNU/Linux box (Redhat 7.2, Kernel 2.4.19) since I installed the 2.4.19 kernel a couple of months ago.. 1) My system does not turn off automatically after issuing the powerdown command.. I have to turn it of manually. Earlier, with the RH 7.2 default kernel (2.4.7-10), the power would switch off automatically. Here are the how the relevant variables are set : CONFIG_PM=y CONFIG_APM=m # CONFIG_APM_IGNORE_USER_SUSPEND is not set CONFIG_APM_DO_ENABLE=y CONFIG_APM_CPU_IDLE=y # CONFIG_APM_DISPLAY_BLANK is not set CONFIG_APM_RTC_IS_GMT=y CONFIG_APM_ALLOW_INTS=y # CONFIG_APM_REAL_MODE_POWER_OFF is not set I got these settings from linuxnewbie.org a couple of months ago. They do not work for me, nor can I explain why they are the way they are. They seem to work for others with a similar problem though. 2) I cannot mount audio cd's anymore. I can play them through gtcd, I just cannot rip them.. The mount command tells me that I got a bad fs type or there are too many mounted filesystems. I can mount normal data cd's easily enough.. Also, what is a good strategy to follow while compiling a kernel? Is it better to make as many modules as possible or the other way round? Are there any particular features which would be better off as part of the kernel image rather than as modules? Currently, I have compiled very few features as modules. Hi all Whenever i log on to SUn os 5.2 or solaris i always face 1 problem : when i open a file using 'vi' editor, then it gets opened as in linux but, when i try to right something using 'Esc i' then <-- BSpace and delete button do not work as in linux and put some unnecessary characters at start of prceding line. hi there are two types of users/groups. system users and normal users. system groups include groups like apache, mail, etc nd other app and system groups. there are users like root who are members of more system groups as well. what is the use of these system groups? can i create a normal user as a member of one of these system groups? say apache. if i can what additional functionality will that user get. will that user get full access to all apache files? including changing the config etc? thnx in advance

Query on Setting different bandwidths using a leae line

Hi This can be done thru a bandwidth shapping in your router if your router supporting bandwidth shapping module, I think ciscos all above 1700 series supports bandwidth shapping or u can do it thru IPtables in Linux 7.3. But u cant control bandwidth given to a particular user, controls can be done thru services they use. According to services u can allocate the bandwidth, for example u r using SMTP service u can allocate more bandwidth to 25 ports. rgds girish My problem is, how can I control the BANDWIDTH given to a user thru a leased Line at different rates. The scenario is like this, I have a 128 kpbs leased line, from this 128 kbps leased line, I want to give connections to users with a different BW, like 64 kbps for some and 128 kbps for others, how can I get this thing done. Hoping to have your resononse and suggestions ASAP.
