I have gone through all the post related to LAMP...
I feel, I should give more details regarding nature of automated system required...
So that I can get some specific pointers...
System Requirement:
1. It will be mainly a small 3000 to 5000 record database with student details
2. As of now, main application of it is to generate exam grade reports...
3. And it should be able to give concise & well formatted reports, which could be printed on ordinary printers
4. The periodic backup of …
[View More]records, if it can be integrated in automation system, rather than relying on OS level backup.
According to me, there are three main parts of the system,
1) Data Entry of records
2) Algorithm to generate reports based on schools grading logic
3) Report Generation & Printing
My View
* 1st & 3rd part functions should be extremely user friendly.
* Business logic should be isolated into module of its own, and tightly secured. (I don't know how?)
* Report generation will be multilingual (English, Gujarati), so better printing support.
Now,
1) If at all LAMP is feasible? If yes, how can LAMP setup be utilized?
2) Application should be Desktop based or web based?

Hi kamlesh,
very good option..
PHP comes with inbuilt support to MySQL.
For apche you need to configure it separately for PHP.
Just check the licenses of MySQL, I'm not very sure whether you can use it for commercial purposes..
have fun..

[View More] A query about LAMP setup
Dear All,
I am a computer engineer working as network consultant based in Mumbai.
Recently, my school administrators, have asked me to propose a solution for
automating the entire "student progress report" creation & maintenance
setup.
I could have gone with "Win2K-SQL 2K-VB" plateform,
But I also want to explore the possibility in Linux based solution as
essentially it will be free for school.
I am looking at LAMP architecture...
Linux + Apache + MySQL + (Perl/PHP/Python)
Am I thinking right?
Please guide me
Regards,
Kamlesh Parmar

There might be some PHP frameworks for access control and
authorization. Afterall, almost all decent web-apps …
[View More]require this. I
guess frameworks like PHPNuke would have it though I never looked at
them. We developed an ASP framework for our Intranet and most of the
logic and AC specifications are on the DB side so it won't be too
difficult to adapt it to PHP.

With Windows 98 installed. the partition table looks different at least in
my PC. Because windoze 98 does not allow more than one primary partition.
The Linux partitions should have started from hda5 and onwards, unless you
create a boot partition which is usually hda2.
if you could give the exact error Lilo gives, it would be more helpful.
And one more thing, in older systems, such as P2, Lilo requires the start
of the boot partition (in your case the root partition) to be within 1024
…
[View More]cylinders. This feature is mother board dependant, raher BIOS dependant.
Finally ( but not limited to) it could be your /etc/lilo.conf file.
