Increasing the Range of a Wi-Fi LAN 802.11b

Dear Linux (thus making this post eligible for posting here :)) users. Here is an interesting problem. Introduction: Lets just say Person A has an X company's broadband (512kbps) installed and working already. Person B, who lives opposite to person A would like to share that connection and is able to do so already. (by using a 802.11b router/access point, which is used mainly as a switch and an access point only). The problem: Limited by range. 3 Concrete walls seperate the access point to Person B thus B cannot use the net effectively. unless B stands outside A's door or is always in A's face all the time. I (oops, person B) can 1) Get a signal booster which is not easily available or is expensive. 2) An antenna (again expensive) and not tested yet. OR (ideally) would like to utilize my existing peripherals to "bridge" or "repeat" ? 4) Have seen a lot of articles about the pringles antenna or the yagi shotgun but how do i connect it to my built in device? Equipment: I have 2 Wireless routers/access points (airlink and netgear mr814) and built in wireless 802.11g. All are standard devices meant for home users. Limitations: 1)Cost (would like to do it on the cheap as much as possible) thanks! abhi

Hi All With all this hype of Gmail and Google, I was wondering what people here think about the Google OS (GooOS) http://www.kottke.org/04/04/google-operating-system Since stuff at Google is proprietory (I think) are there people in the free software world thinking of countering a giant like Google? I feel they seem to have succeeded with replacing stuff from Microsoft with the GNU/Linux OS and Open Office Suite... It's just a matter of time when all the people on the planet wake up to using it. ;-) If this is considered 'off topic', I apologize and promise not to post any more thoughts like this. The same is true in parallel computing if one node dies they all fail, also as a result you can only process infomation as fast as the slowest node so if someone brought in a 500mhz laptop and pluged it in for example the whole flash mob would only be able to process at 500mhz and not 1300 mhz. Now something like SETI and United Devices were people give there extra cycles to a cause you can have nodes that are only on every now and then and you can have a 486 in there we a 2.6 P4 because the way that data is processed, it doesnt have to be done in real time. -------------- For us, the speed may not matter if we're just trying to get a group together and try something for fun. -Rajesh

sad and depressed - Help! system hangs, files vanish

Hello I am a new user, and new to this list too, although I was here a couple of years back too. I am running Red Hat 9.0 on my home PC, and the installation (which was a simple straightforward home selection from the install choice menu) has some troubling behaviour - namely the computer hangs from time to time. The hardware is an old Compaq Celeron, with 128 MB. It lacks a reset button, and in fact lacks an off switch. When the machine hangs I have no choice but to pull the plug from the mains. It has an On switch, but pressing this twice will not restart the machine. In fact, once the switch is pressed on, it no longer has any function. When the machine hangs I lose control of both the mouse and the keyboard. This happens at least once a week (the machine is usually on). So far so good - or not so good. When it reboots, it goes through a file system integrity check routine, which always reaches around 99% and then stops, asking me to use Ctrl-D to reboot again, which I do. It then completes the integrity check rapidly and restarts properly. On two occasions (including right now) this has gone awry. Right now, although it allows me to start up under the registered login identities (including root) the GUI has been disturbed, with the standard icons and the wallpaper missing. I logged in as root and found the files missing from the /home/[username] folder were visible, but greyed out. The Find command says the files do not exist. What is worse is that the downloaded mail (no longer on the mail server) is also apparently gone, and the Mozilla identity destroyed. This happened once before, just after I had tediously completed updating the Address Book (transferred from my other laptop). I am seriously dismayed at the thought of having to do it once more, plus of course not being able to retrieve those mails, one or two of which are critical. Can anyone guide me on a) how to prevent it hanging in the first place and b) how to recover the missing identities/files (actually since the identity login and passwords work, apparently the system is partially aware of the users, but their files are now unreachable (even the ones whose filenames I can see greyed out), including the desktop wallpaper selection. If this is a problem already discussed here, please just point me to the thread, or else do mail me directly if you have a way forward. -- Vickram

The Sunday Meet was Great..

Dear Friends, I attended the Bombay LUG meet for the first time on April 11. It was fantabulous. The work that has been on for Localisation of GNU/Linux is really great. I know its a lot of work and Hats Off to all those who are involved in this work. The discussions were enlightening, especially Dr. Nagarjun's explanation as to why Linux should be called GNU/Linux. He showed us his Mac Powerbook OS which runs on a Free Kernel called Darwin and which was only possible due to GNU tools. So naturally it is GNU/Darwin. Point well taken Sir. All this has helped me to explain to others what is exactly FLOSS. I have spread the word among all my friends about this meet and we all are eagerly awaiting the next meeting. Problem with mplayer playing .mpg file.

Hi, In the current month's "Linuxforu" issue there is mpg file (it is a video file of RMS giving speech). This file runs perfectly alright with xine, but with mplayer the audio of the file runs faster then it should normally be. (I am not talking about audio-video alignment.) The audio comes out as if in fast-forward mode. I tried to configure different audio output method, but the same result. I even tried running mplayer on console using frame buffer mode. But still the same result. I tried the latest version of mplayer, which also gives the same problem. The file plays absolutely fine with xine. Has anybody had similar problem ? Rajen.

Fellas, The link below as rajesh rightly suggests talks about support for Intel machines. But AMD seems supported too.
