permissions on /var/www in Ubuntu

I've messed up the ugo permissions on the /var/www directory which is now giving me a 403 Forbidden error. Details as follows. 1. 'www-data' user and group - created (I assume) when I installed apache2 and used by it. 2. The /var/www directory had 'root' in its owner and group fields. 3. I changed the owner and group of /var/www to 'www-data' and added 'root' and 'rohit' (normal user) to the 'www-data' group and changed the directory permissions to 775. Now, I get a 403 error. The apache2-default folder, which is owned by 'root' is accessible through through the server. Can anybody tell me the right permissions of the www directory so I can add/edit/delete stuff without using sudo?. -- Rohit V. Bhute http://blog.rvbhute.org

(AntiDialer is a GNU/Linux broadband dialer for Sify broadband users) Hi, I have released AntiDialer v0.1 into the wild today. The main feature of this release is that it is no longer just a GUI dialer. It is now a console based dialer with a GUI plugin. Here are the details: AntiDialer version 0.1 is out today. Get it here: https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=157014&package_id=17… This version has been released in three forms: 0) source tarball 1) debian package 2) rpm package (auto-created from the deb package with alien) New Features: ------------------ 0. Complete rewrite of the core to remove all dependence on QT libraries. QT dependency is only for the UI plugin now. 1. Console based interface for the shell junkies 2. Plugin interface to allow new feature implementation in the form of separate plugin libraries 3. A GUI plugin based on QT 4. Ability to provide username/password at console. You may write the command with username and password into an rc.d file and it will autoconnect on startup. Features removed: -------------------------- 0. Heartbeat: This feature is useless unless you want a tray icon alive all the time. A tray icon can be implemented as a plugin. MTNL says IE is vulnerable and "It is suggested to install another browser apart from IE as a standby alternative. Following are some of the other standard browsers available on internet and their locations from where they can be downloaded. CUI (text-based) OS?

LO, If given a choice, would anybody like to come back to a CUI based Operating System...those good old days of UNIX / the 1990's (early) Linux OS? (or GNU/Linux, if it had been associated) This very thought has its roots in the short story below! Long time back in my first year (BSc I. T.), I had developed a small utility for DOS in C(we did not have GNU/Linux anywhere around in first year!) which was a "one letter DOS"(kindof emulator for DOS). Any user who would run it, would just have to type a single letter to execute / display something. For example, if one wants to clear the screen, he has to just type the letter 'b' (b for blank). Linux compatible PCI IDE adapter

I am looking to setup software RAID-1 on my home computer and need an extra IDE interface. Any ideas on tried-and-tested PCI-IDE adapters/chipsets for GNU/Linux which are locally available(read Lamington Road). I am also considering the alternative of buying a SATA hdd, in which case I would need to know of Linux compatible PCI-SATA controllers/chipsets. Once again the operative conditions would be locally available and somewhat cheap(<= 1k). Thanks, farazs
