First of all very well-written JTD! Well let me narrate an incident, a real-life incident when I visited Microsoft Campus in Gachibowli, Hyderabad. It was part of our college tour, and was made possible by one of the seniors who is working in M$. I had a nice debate regarding FOSS, M$, ...., which was mainly initiated by the M$ fellas who could not stop asking which one among us though Billy to evil, thought M$ was bad, etc... During the couse of this debate, suddenly when they were pushed to a corner, they came up with the question: Why would you ever use Linux? Why would you ever use anything other than Winblows? Now what about this? Is this how employees of a company, an American company owned by a good American citizen, behave? What about the philosophies of democracy that Mr. Bush and his cronies are trying to push forward? The whole point is that M$ is not as likeable as you think. Think of a world without Winblows and you would get the logic. The whole idea of Windows making computing easy does not hold. Yeah they have definitely made it a idiot-friendly thing. But that is dangerous in the same way that driving would be a dangerous thing if you made licenses optional. The plethora of viruses and worms that we find everywhere would have been lesser if it was not for that Winblows user who so happily clicks on every mail in the mailbox, and every .exe on the floppy. Kernel panic in ubuntu

My Ubuntu install threw up a Kernel panic today. The details during start-up were as follows: <snip> [4294671.914000]crc error [4294671.915000]Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS:Unable to mount root fs on unknown block(0,0) [4294671.915000] </snip> In the GUI startup , the display would freeze at "Loading hardware drivers..." In safe mode, it dropped me to "root@bhute" -but I had no idea what to check and rectify. Incidently, even Win XP restarted automaically. In safe mode, it restarted at the same point i.e. loading drivers. Running Ubuntu's memtest gave me some 310272 errors. And to make me more confused, the system worked all OK after the memtest. Any hints would be welcome. Incidently, Dapper froze around 10 times on my machine in two weeks. Is my RAM or HDD on the death bed? -- Rohit V. Bhute http://blog.rvbhute.org/

Installing Fedora Core on other's hard disk?

Is it ok if I install Fedora Core 5 using my computer on my friend's hard disk drive? Would my friend be able to use the OS once, he plugs it back to his system? My computer configuration is completely different than his --------------------------------- If you don't know something, its always better to learn it and then experiment with components! I had the same problem, where the system would freeze anytime. Possibly, it your RAM, but, probably, you could try testing your RAM on your friend's computer. Also, observe the amount of time your system works before freezing, for few days. Also, in the BIOS, observe the temperature of CPU and the chassis, before it freezes. My problem had its root in the motherboard. I had tested my RAM, my power supply for faults, and replaced the power supply, after a number of test's at my friend's place. But, it did not solve the problem. Ultimately, I gave my motherboard for repairing and things are normal till now! __________________________________________________________ Yahoo! [commerical] workgroup server

installing opera in linspire
