Hi,
Has anybody use the Reliance WiMax (Broadnet) services? I am
more interested in their services in Mumbai. Good, Bad, Ugly?
Apparently they install separate antenna for each connection. The size
of this is as big as a laptop monitor or such, thats what the
marketing exec told me.
What I want to know is - 1) compatibility with Linux Boxes
2) does it work during the rainy season? Considering that rains in
Mumbai or Panvel is slightly on the extreme side ;), does it work fine
…
[View More]during the rainy season? I guess the same applies to the DTH setup
even.
Only reason, I am thinking its worth a try is because I won't
have to depend on availabilty of power and such because I will be
responsible to provide power to the setup which I can in case of load
shedding as well. Thanks in advance.
Cheers!

Hello,
In the NTFS file system, under the security option in a folder's properties,
there is an advanced option where a user/group can be restricted from
writing or deleting existing files in the directory but at the same time can
be granted permission to create a new file or folder. So while existing data
on that folder cannot be edited or deleted, the user can paste new files in
that folder. Can such special permissions be granted in EXT3 or JFS file
systems? On the net I find that advanced …
[View More]ACLs mainly have 3 options of read
write and execute. If write permission is granted, user will delete files.
Without read permission, user cannot paste new files.

Hi Dinesh,
Saw your blog entry on electoral reforms. Is there any FOSS software which
will help the voting process? I think we really need such enabling tools/
category of FOSS softwares. Once it becomes easy and convenient to vote, and
it is ingrained as a habit from childhood, maybe some of your concerns will
be addressed and India will become a REAL democracy rather than a SHAM one
it is at present.
The software would fulfill a need in myriad applications e.g. in
1 Housing societies AGMs

4 in classrooms
5 in companies, schools, adventure groups, theater audiences, neighbourhood

I tried searching on http://directory.fsf.org and other places but have yet
to find such a software. Maybe somebody will make it someday
Almost all Swiss citizens participate in voting on important issues thru the
sms/mobile route and they vote atleast once a month since it is so
convenient. This is what I learned from a person who came to tell us about
RTI from the CHRI -- www.humanrightsinitiative.org.

Hello,
Before attempting Kubuntu 8.10, the AAO was tried out with Kubuntu 8.04
using a regular external HDD controller connected to a Mosher Bayer DVD R/W.
It would keep stopping at the 'initramfs' prompt. Then I tried creating a
USB LiveCD in my pen drive but that was not successfull in booting properly.
Then the Kubuntu 8.10 CD ( which did not boot till the desktop in my Intel
845 GEBV2 PC) was tried out and it was able to boot into the live desktop on
the AAO.
My pre-installation worry was …
[View More]the single partition already installed with XP
Home and the hidden rescue partition getting knocked out. I wanted dual
boot. However fdisk -l showed that the rescue partition was the first one
and the rest of the disk was XP. During Kubuntu 8.10's installation, in the
partitioning section, there was already an option of dividing the XP
partition into 50% XP and 50% Ubuntu. Installlation went smoothly and did
not damage the XP pre-installed. On booting into XP after installing
Kubuntu, Windows detected a file system error and went into automatic
scandisk ( don't stop that process ). Then it automatically rebooted and
went on to boot normally and all was well.
Kubuntu 8.10 detected everything properly except the wireless LAN. The wired
LAN kept going on/off even after upgrading all packages. However after a few
reboots it appeared to take the wired connection properly. The wireless
issue is simple to resolve by following instructions given in this site
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AspireOne110L#WLan
For the webcam this site https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AspireOne talks
about 'luvcview'. It works fine and has many detailed settings. Its buttons
are tiny but anyway results are good. Don't follow the wireless instructions
given here. Go to the earlier link for 8.10.
I haven't tried the card slots as I don't have any such cards. However the
website has some information on it.
A word of caution. Don't mess with the wireless on/off switch on the front
side of the AAO. It disables the wireless well but getting it back was next
to impossible. Repeated attempts to bring it to life failed. In XP I would
get the on-screen display for enable and disable but no sign of the hardware
itself. Finally I shut down the system and gave the switch some exercise.
That brought it back to life. Whew!
Anyway this netbook and Kubuntu 8.10 are like fish and water. Installation
with live partitioning is fully automatic. This mail is being sent from the
AAO using the wireless connection.

Hello FOSSers,
I believe that there are many students on this list. I would like to
ask them few questions about their FOSS usage and adoption. I would
love to hear from you guys and gals using FOSS. I will compile the
list of reasons and put it up for everyone.
This should help people who conduct workshops and seminars in the
colleges to create more appealing presentations for students.
