Hi I am trying to inall the yum installer ( yum-2.2.0-1.noarch.rpm ) from http://linux.duke.edu/projects/yum/download/2.2/ rpm -ivh yum-2.2.0-1.noarch.rpm warning: yum-2.2.0-1.noarch.rpm: Header V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 69886cc7 Preparing... ########################################### [100%] 1:yum ########################################### [100%] i restarted yum and it started with no error [root@esha software]# /etc/init.d/yum start Enabling nightly yum update: [ OK ] but when i try to install gcc it give me the following error [root@esha software]# yum install gcc Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/bin/yum", line 6, in ? import yummain File "/usr/share/yum-cli/yummain.py", line 23, in ? import yum ImportError: No module named yum [root@esha software]# can some one help me with this error ... thanks -- Regards Agnello Dsouza www.linux-vashi.blogspot.com

query about double firewalls

Hi people. Some of you might remember I had asked about the chaotic performance of a LAMP server a few months ago. My team finally brought the local server where we had tested our sites earlier online. We eliminated each component of the stack. Finally, we were left with the firewalls. At the ISP where we have co located, we have two firewalls - one dedicated hardware firewall shared among three servers and one on the machine itself. There is some NATing also involved since the LAMP server has a 192.168.x.x address. The test server which we were using as our baseline had just its own firewall (iptables). At the firm suggestion of the ISP's tech/network guys, today, we switched off the LAMP server's iptables firewall. Now sites are working like smooooth! <http://pastebin.com/m63e4e613> This is our test server's iptables listing. The LAMP server has ports 21 and 443 also open in addition to one listed here. The OUTPUT chain counters also show a lot of traffic. Otherwise, both iptables are also same. So my doubt is: was the double firewall (and NATing) the reason for the earlier chaotic performance? Sabayon Linux

Hello All, This month's LFY comes with live + install Sabayon 1.1 Linux. My vendor too has co-operated to exchange defective media. However this month LFY appears to have improved its media quality and I have not found any problems yet. I tried out the live Sabayon DVD and there is only one way to describe Sabayon Linux :- TOO SEXY. It gets even better. Sabayon uses KDE, the great desktop environment. Sabayon is already loaded with popular multimedia codecs and works out of the box. The sound was not coming from my speakers and it was because the 'headphones' channel in the mixer (kmix) did not have its green dot highlighted. Once that was clicked, sound was perfect. Firefox comes pre-loaded with flash player so you can watch/listen flash content too. My system has a 512 MB RAM but I am sure even 256 MB RAM machines will load the live session without a problem as it appears to be quite light on the system. I am writing this mail from the live session. Even if one has his/her own favourite distro, this live DVD is definately worth a look. If any of you guys are into Linux related education / propagation activities then please let me know what might be the critical points that one must cover. fossconf update

Hi, Fossconf took place in Chennai on Feb 1 - 3 2008. There were around 100 talks, 40 demo stalls with student projects done in FOSS and tutorial sessions. The attendance was around 700 on the first day, 1500-2000 on the second day and around 600 on the third day. About 80% of the audience were engineering college students. Volunteers and student projects came from engineering colleges in Chennai as well as from colleges in Salem, Madurai, Vellore and Tirunelveli. Most of the speakers were first time speakers, and although the bulk of them were from Tamilnadu, we had speakers from Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad, Goa, Trivandrum and Nellore. We also had a large number of speakers from the academic community who were participating in a FOSS event for the first time. The event was pretty chaotic at times since all of us were n00bs at conducting conferences. Many speakers had a rough time. In spite of the huge attendance, poor logistics lead to many talks having a very thin audience. But by and large, the feedback we have got has been positive. We thank those members of your LUG who helped out in the event and gave us support. Hi, Some sites which I felt fit the bill for being in the hall of shame. http://bankofindia.com Internet Banking doesn't work(shows a Security Error!,LOL) when used with FF but works perfectly with IE.Plus there is a declared statement at the bottom of every page:"Works best with IE 5.5 or better" http://irctc.co.in Same statement as above is present at the bottom of very page. http://incredibleindia.org Not exactly a Hall of Shame candidate in terms of F/OSS,but the majority of the links are broken.The feedback email links are also broken.God knows how tourism is booming in India.
