only the grub.conf from the grub root partition you specified when
installing grub, which is different from your distro root partition.
eg. at the grub shell you do
root (hd0,0)
setup (hd0)
this will setup grub in hd0 mbr and read menu.lst (the default grub
menu file) from hd0,0/boot/grub/menu.lst, in which you will have
entries like
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz root=/dev/hda1 yak yak #kernel from /dev/hda1
boot
root (hd0,1)
kernel /vmlinuz root=/dev/hda2 yak yak # kernel from /dev/hda2/
boot
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-latest root=/dev/hda2 #kernel from /dev/hda1 with root
file system from hda2. u better have all modules compiled in or a
copy of (/dev/hda1)/lib/2.xx.yy/ in (/dev/hda2)/lib
And ofcourse you can boot any combo of disks n partitions from the
grub shell

Grub is almost an os with a shell and fs reader. once stage2 is loaded
it can recognise partitions and most filesystems.

Hi
I was just Reading the article from
http://www.comptechdoc.org/os/linux/howlinuxworks/linux_hlbootproc.html
in the article
before the system can boot the BIOS detect the first available IDE device,
on this device is the MBR which contain the boot loader and partition
tables
now suppose i have Two OS install -- debian Etch and the centos ...and grub
is the default boot loader ( and grub file is located in /etc/grub.conf
..which has instruction / menu screen for booting the various OS )
but i don't seem to understand one thing - How is /etc/grub.conf made
available to the boot loader even before a OS is selected ( explanation
not very clear in the article )

can some one help me with this
Agnello
All,
I have an old CD-ROM and a non-functional CD-Writer, which fails
invariably and tends to freeze my system randomly.
Are there locations in Mumbai, which recycle this ? Or could it be put
to some other good use (the motor for rotating the wheels of a robot
car?)
Similarly, I have a few CDs which cannot be used any longer. (few old
Ubuntu CDs). How can they be recycled, if they can be at all.
A few months ago, I did search for a few on justdial dot com and queried
them over email (since they listed it). However, I haven't got any
response from anyone, hence the query to the list.
This has nothing to do with FOSS, but I hope, I haven't digressed too
far.
hi guys,
any web promotion tricks using free software gnu/linux ?
warm regards
F.J.Sylvester
