Can Red Hat Enterprise products fall under FOSS?

Hi Folks, One of my friend was arguing me that RED HAT is superior to any of the FREELY available Linux Distro as it provides Support (although in form of Subscriptions). However I told him that he can get free community support for many other free distros and more over they are Open Source. Now for this he said that Red Hat too is open Source, and he has got one installed in his home through a CD provided by his institute where he is studying REHL. I asked him, whether he needed to enter Serial Key like Windows, he replied no, but he wont be able to use their support. So I told him that he is using a PIRATED version of LINUX. HE said yes. I went ahead to cross check Red Hat License Agreement, and saw it to be similar to Microsoft's EULA that states, you cannot install it on more computers than the licensed purchased for etc. Secondly if the Subscription expires, the OS will no longer be Legal until its renewed (similar to Norton Anti Virus) So my question is... Can Red Hat enterprise products be really considered as Open Source (as their website claims) http://investors.redhat.com/index.cfm *Red Hat is the world's leading open source provider. Solutions include our Red Hat Enterprise Linux operating platforms, JBoss Enterprise Middleware and other Red Hat enterprise technologies. * I am a bit confused on this argument... When we refer to Open Source philosophy, it says "FREEDOM", but REHL EULA looks similar to Microsoft EULA, then is also Red Hat play a role in giving rise to "PIRATED LINUX" race? Bye Regards

Bluetooth dongle compatible with Linux

Hi all, I'm in the market for a USB bluetooth dongle and plan to go to Lamington Road in a few days.I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 64 bit,so what brand or shop do you guys recommend based on experience?I know such issues have been discussed time and again on this list,but the link for searching the mailing list archives on the wiki is currently not functioning,so please guide me as to where and on what I can get the best deal.I plan to use it only occasionally. [OT/commercial/x-post] Looking for professional help to integrate LDAP auth (Mac OSX, Linux and Windows XP)

Please contact me offlist/directly if you have implemented: LDAP authentication, using Mac OSX 10.5 server with it's bundled Open Directory as the backend to authenticate users on Linux, OSX (10.4 and 10.5) desktops, and Windows XP SP3 desktops. A client has a setup of heterogenous desktop setup and wants to implement Directory Services for the organization. The composition is 80% Linux desktop + 2 Linux File servers (NFS+Samba), 7 OSX desktops and 5 Windows XP desktops). The user's Unix (Linux/OSX) profile is portable to the respective platform via LDAP and Windows profile is portable through Samba. Samba+LDAP back end needs to be configured on 2 Linux file servers as well on the OSX server (for user's home dir). -- Arun Khan PS - I have already tried openLDAP (on Linux), works with Linux desktops, OSX clients see the LDAP server but do not authenticate from the graphical login window.

Opening fyjc.org.in in Firefox - Successfully

Hi folks, While going through that Red Hat License discussion, I had completely forgotten that there was a thread regarding FYJC being restricted to IE Users (how mean of them!) Here's the solution to open it in Firefox. Its called User Agent Switch (I didnt get chance to real complete thread, so may be some one would have already suggested this solution, if not then please read further :) In Firefox click Toold > Add ons Search for "User Agent Switch" Install the addon Restart FireFox Click Tools > Default User Agent > Internet Explorer > Select version Do not restart FireFox Type the url http://www.fyjc.org.in in Address field Bingo, this works :) Bye Regards

Bugzilla issue tracking of foss india

Based on these explainations: ========================================================================================================================== Now that we've cleared that up, here is a simplified (IMHO) explanation of what everybody already said: RHEL == Linux Kernel + GPL/BSD/MIT ...etc licensed Software + Red Hat trademarks (artwork etc) - How must does the RHEL distro cost ? * 0/- - How does Red Hat make money, if the cost of the RHEL distro is 0 ? * Subscriptions, trainings, consultancy ...and maybe more. - How is the RHEL distro. distrubuted ? * The sources are available for free on redhat.com and Red Hat provides CDs/DVDs of the distro. to it's customers (people who buy subscriptions or undertake trainings ...etc) ================================================================================================================= Can somebody explain the following clauses in Red Hat License Agreement? http://www.redhat.com/licenses/rhel_us_3.html 5 Reporting and Inspection 5.1 Reporting. Client will promptly notify Red Hat if the number of Installed Systems exceeds the number of Installed Systems for which Client has paid the applicable fee. In its notice, Client will include both the number of additional Installed Systems and the date(s) on which such Installed Systems were put into use. Red Hat will invoice Client for the applicable Services for such Installed Systems on a pro-rata basis and Client will pay for such Services in accordance with this Agreement. 5.2 Inspection. During the term of this Agreement and for one (1) year thereafter, Red Hat or its designated agent may inspect and review Client's facilities and records in order to verify Client's compliance with this Agreement. Any such inspection and review will take place only during Client's normal business hours and upon no less than ten (10) days prior written notice from Red Hat. Red Hat will give Client written notice of any non-compliance, including the number of underreported Installed Systems, and Client will have fifteen (15) days from the date of such notice to make payment to Red Hat for the applicable Services provided to the underreported Installed Systems. If Client had underreported the number of Installed Systems by more than five percent (5%), Client will also pay Red Hat for the cost of such inspection.

zte wireless data terminal installation and configuration in ubuntu

BSNL punjab circle has recently introduced a scheme where they are giving broadband speed of around 2.4 Mbps at unlimited download for just Rs 550 per month thru a wireless CDMA data card made by ZTE china. The wireless card can be purchased for Rs 4200 and the data connectivity is limited to just the punjab telecom circle. This scheme has not been publicised and has been in operation for the last 3-4 months. I came to know about it by chance thru word of mouth and the demand is very high but supply very less. The problem is that i haven't been able to install it using wine etc in ubuntu 9.04 with the installation CD Can anybody help if they have installed/configured the same in ubuntu 9.04 etc? Kussh
