MS Power User reports on the results of a 2,300-employee experiment by
Microsoft with a four-day work week:
In August this year, Microsoft Japan ran an experiment where for one month
they had a 3 day weekend, taking Friday off. This was paid leave and did
not impact the worker’s usual vacation allocation.
Some results were predictable. Workers were happier and took 25.4 percent
fewer days off during the month. There were also savings from spending less
time at work. 23.1 percent less electricity was used and 58.7 percent fewer
pages were printed. More importantly from a bottom-line standpoint,
however, productivity went up 39.9%, as fewer and shorter meetings were
held, often virtually rather than in person.

Last year, Finland launched a free online crash course in artificial
intelligence with the aim of educating its citizens about the new
technology. Now, as a Christmas present to the world, the European nation
is making the six week program available for anyone to take. The Verge
reports:
Strictly speaking, it’s a present for the European Union. Finland is
relinquishing the EU’s rotating presidency at the end of the year, and
decided to translate its course into every EU language as a gift to
citizens. But there aren’t any geographical restrictions as to who can take
the course, so really it’s to the world’s benefit. The course certainly
proved itself in Finland, with more than 1 percent of the Nordic nation’s
5.5 million citizens signing up. The course, named Elements of AI, is
currently available in English, Swedish, Estonian, Finnish, and German.

*the top 10 most downloaded mobile apps of the decade, and Facebook has an
unsurprising grip on the whole operation
<https://www.mashable.com/tech/9508/facebook-owns-the-4-most-downloaded-apps…>.
Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram were the four most downloaded
apps across Android and iOS in the 2010s, and all four come from the same
company. It is, if nothing else, a clear view of just how much Facebook
dominated our daily lives from 2010 to 2019. Its flagship app and Messenger
spin-off both have user counts in the billions, while Instagram and
WhatsApp are household names.*
