I can vouch for xfstt too. I'm using it under Debian, and it works quite well. No anti-aliasing support though... There's yet another package available for Debian called xfs-xtt. However, it is a bit more compilcated to set up. With xfstt, all you have to do is dump all your truetype fonts in /usr/share/fonts/truetype and fire up xfstt. No need to create fonts.dir/.scale!
I borrowed some true type fonts from a Windows 98 machine. I do not know if it is the right way.
Unfortunately, M$ seems to be the only source to obtain standard fonts of high quality. You can get the fonts from M$'s website too (http://www.microsoft.com/truetype/). The licence doesn't seem to be restrictive...
