Are you trying to boot into graphical live CD? Try installer which work on low ram
uses light desktop environment or just command-line.
using command line is fun: lynx, w3m, mplayer, etc.
If you want some challenge, try debian and build your system from minimal CD http://www.debian.org/CD/netinst/
