On July 22 a $35 (or 1500 INR) hand-held Linux computing device was unveiled by Shri Kapil Sibal, the Union Minister for Human Resource Development of India. The goal of the project is to lower the price to around $20 in time and eventually reaching the amazing price of $10. http://www.linuxjournal.com/content/indias-35-tablet-everything-killer
So whats the final deal ? Does anyone have a clear specifications of the device ? I have also heard some rumours on HRD being approached the 'famous' negroponte(OLPC) himself and also by big shots google and M$ .
I am not bothered if the manufacturing costs could be met. It would be very easily available for that price as HRD has publicly announced its willingness to bear some costs .
What about the GNU/Linux community . Wouldn't it be good for us if we get to know the specs and the OS used ( which is a linux kernel and god knows what else ) . People in the community can help the govt by writing some apps and making it ready for the student who gets the device .
willing to see a positive response from HRD ministry !!
