GLUG Meeting on 13th July, 4pm at KReSIT, IIT Campus, Powai. ---------------------------------------------------------- On Mon, Jul 07, 2003 at 01:09:21AM +0530, Nagarjuna G. wrote:
It was decided in the last meeting that the KReSIT's distance education program on GNU/Linux will be supported by the various GLUGS in the country. The details of this program are going to be decided/discussed. Sameer could throw more light on this.
The workshop is very experimental since we don't know how the network at the Distance Education Program would hold up to such a program. Our immediate concern is guaging what kind of response we can expect for the workshop. A tentative description follows, we could arrange a practical hands-on session if there's enough response. The likely dates are some weekend in August, since the DEP people need around a month for publicity and registration through their normal channels.
Target audience: ---------------- Small Office / Home Office (SOHO) setups, PC Vendors
Duration: --------- 1 day, approximately 5 hours and a lunch break
General Layout: --------------- * Free Software Philosophy and why is it good for the end user. * General overview of GNU/Linux distributions * Tour of the Desktop environment on GNU/Linux, multiple-boot systems. * Office software - word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, documentation, printers, fax, etc. * Internet access - proxying, caching, browser, mail clients * Device-specific guidelines if possible - dialup lines, internal modems, cable internet connections, etc * Graphics tools - a demo of GIMP, for example * Localisation efforts - the desktop in various Indian languages * Hand-outs like Knoppix CDs, some other distro, contact details for people/agencies who can offer support services in various locations, etc.
This is just the initial idea, lets refine this in the next meeting, People interested in speaking at the workshop, please come forward!
Sameer.
