Those who have recently purchased laptops and are running linux properly on them, please give their suggestions and opinions for lappys that install linux out of the box. Last time Krish and his team had a tough time getting linux up on 102 ggc with dual core processors. So this time we are playing safe.
IBM Thinkpads are known to work out of the box with all the hardware detected (except for, of course internal modems) and working properly with common distributions. I would recommend several R series models available.
I can't agree with Anurag more on any topic but this one. With a right distro/kernel combination IBM TP just work and without any issue at all. We both have T42 (shameless plug) and I don't think we regret our 1 year old decision to buy a laptop. But yes I have seen more people running R Series ( R51/R52 ) than any other TP model. And all this people use Linux and different distros even - (K)Ubuntu, SUSE.
I think R60 are the entry level TPs these days, just check their configuration and see if they would statisfy the client's requirement.
And no, IBM doesnt pay me for advertising :)
Seriously? You must not have give proper mailing address.
Cheers!
