U dont need a device like a modem, the modem is inbuilt into the phone, its not so simple though to connect to the internet..
Reliance provides software for linux, so it works for a fact, besides the speed using GPRS is not very good at least for a PC to surf.
Reliance internet speed is unreliable besides it is costly if used for long periods of time. GPRS on the other hand, carries a fixed charge (Rs. 500 - 600 per month). However, it is slower (28-40kbps)

i havent tried to connect to internet using a pc , but have connected to the internet using the phone by dailing to vsnl and surfed some sites!!!
would like to test it on the pc also
