Novell is moving from KDE to Gnome as the default desktop. This is partly due to the the acquisition of Ximian which was built on GTK libraries. The future version of OpenSuse will use Gnome as the default desktop. I think OpenSuse 10 has gnome as default but I am not sure.
Maybe Novell will be doing so in near future but as of Opensuse 10.0 GNOME doesn't seem to be a part of SUSe like KDE does. It feels like GNOME has been thrown in at the last minute for the GNOME lovers. And it doesn't have and default desktop. It asks you which desktop you want to set up as ur default while installing - KDE, GNOME and Other are the choices you get.
