Hi,
FC3- i386 & the FC3-x86_64 both work on AMD-64(its backward compatible). However the i386 works on emulated mode... where as the 64 bit version runs on native mode.
*32-bit OS on 64-bit processor:*
*adv.- *Can run all the 32-bit applications successfully
*dis-adv*.- Slightly slower performance(might be noticeable- depends on your RAM and other system config.)
*64-bit OS and 64-bit processor: * *adv.-* Excellent performance.
*dis-adv-* certain applications do not have 64-bit versions. However you can run 32-bit apps. on 64-bit OS using some emulation libraries However these libraries are not available for all apps.Eg. Flash plugin for Firefox, WMV(W32 Codecs etc.)
I would recommend using UBUNTU-64 bit edition (5.04).(good,fast and Debian based..)
Btw...which MOBO are you using for AMD 2800+?
