Anybody installed GNU/Linux computers with M2/Cyrix/AMD cpu.
Have you
encountered any problems. A friend of mine has a M2 system and
wants to
install gnu/linux on it and wanted to know if there are any
known problems
since these are not Intel chips.
I have AMD K6 II 500. Am using Linux since last one yr or so. It rocks. As u might be aware, AMD cpu are known for overheating problem. However I had never had any overheating problem while using Linux (oops, GNU\Linux !) for whatever number of hrs even while X was running. Don't know the reason behind this, but in Win98 it never used to give me good performance. And before upgrading to AMD, I was using Cyrix MII 233. It was also giving decent performance under both the OSes. However, used Linux for very small time then. Used to reboot after every 4-5 hrs of continuous usage !
BTW, I have not heard of M2 cpu before. Who are the manufacturers?
I plan to do a course in c, c++ and unix. Any good institutes
that you know
of. I stay at borivili and work at nariman point and am looking
towards an
institute in the western suburbs. Also, any good books you
recommend.
Nothing better than joining NCST ! They now have centres both at Borivli and Nariman Point. However for starting off, I think, SSi is a good institute. But lot depends on the faculties at individual centres. I had joined SSi, Kandivli (W). Setup was really good with decent Lab. No library though. I think they have a course which exactly matches yr requirement. C, C++, Unix.
And for the Books, My favourites:
1. Let us C - Yeshwant Kanitkar (Quite smooth for Beginners in Programming) 2. Programming in ANSI C - Ram Kumar Agarwal (Covers most aspects of ANSI C) 3. C++ Complete Reference - Herbert Schildt (Spelling of the surname may be wrong) 4. The C++ Programming Language - Bjourne Stroustrup (The baap of all C++ Books, very difficult to digest for beginners in OOP) 5. The Unix Programming Environment - Kerninghan & Rob Pike (Equally good for beginners as well as for experts. Again from the creaters)
( Don't remember Publishers)
The order of list is not supposed to be considered. Nor is the list comprehensive. Others may append their favourites to it. I have not used the book on C by the creaters of C, but some ppl swear by the book.
HTH,
Warm Regards, $ sonpal -kj
