i'm new to this group. I am a 3rd yr student E Computers. We are supposed to do a final year project. I have thinkin of doing a project in Linux. I came across this website http: //www.linuxfromscratch.org/ its helps you building your own linux
I don't think, that this kind of a project is going to help you much in your career. Get a project in which you would learn something more than just sorting dependancies between packages and doing a make. If you can actually make an easy to use install system or yet another package management system, that would be much better. You can do a project in net-snmp, Java mail API (build a client/server) or use the NNTP protocol to do something interesting. I mean just go to sourceforge.net and get a few ideas from the interesting applications hosted there. IMO that would be a much better project for you to do and learn from.
Or why not pickup a dead project and survive it.
