I have installed GNU/Linux Ubuntu on the PC of
one of the senior science
writers. He was using Windows earlier. Now he is
facing some problems
using
a feature of Windows Character Map, wherein he
could assign a key to type
particular alphabet in Shusha Font.
He uses OpenOffice to type his article in Hindi.
If I failed to help him out he might go back to
Windows which I don't
want
and which will discourage others to take Linux.
Could someone please
help?
System>>Administration>>Language
Support.Enable Hindi.The phonetic
type of input should allow him to learn how to type in Hindi
easily.

Thanks Eshwar, but he says that in Windows he could
use Alt+ number keys to
generate some character, could that be done in Ubuntu?
Well all this font stuff is not much needed in Ubuntu (or any Linux desktop).. Hindi input needs to be enabled if it was not already setup or installed. these could tell better.

there is another quicker way (albeit will need some learning to get used to keyboard). http://www.indlinux.org/wiki/index.php/KeyboardGnomeKde
or best is this.. (just select India - Hindi Bolnagri in keyboard layout - see above link ). http://www.indlinux.org/wiki/index.php/BolNagri
What ever is typed will be saved in Unicode and not in font encoding like Shusha.. benefits of which will be immediately evident.

Thanks to all those who offered support and advice. Now, I have enough information (courtesy you all) that I can make GNU/Linux work for him.
