I found "Linux in easy steps" to be a nice beginer's book for GNU/Linux (from the 'in easy steps' series).
Has most of the simple things people want to do after they install GNU/Linux, like setting the wallpaper on X, connecting to the Net etc.
I think it costs a little over Rs.100/=
