Video lan rocks! I installed it yesterday after hunting down not less than 15-20 dependencies (yes, i am an old fashioned Redhat guy). It sure is feature rich but the UI needs a lot to be desired!
Use the wxvlc interface, it is better than the gtk i/f. Actually it'sthe cli interface that is a mind blower. Perfect for just piping a file / stream into vlc and getting all sorts of stuff out. I mean who wants to watch boring shaadi-baraat videos while transcoding.
