Since you mention rockbox, I'll add in Ipod Linux ( http://ipodlinux.org/Main_Page ) .
This is far more better oriented towards ipods. And from what I have seen it has the capability to convert *some* non-video pods to video enabled pods, using mplayer.
It used mpd for music playback. Theoritically it should play back everything if you install the codec onto the drive.
It gives me an extra kick to watch the boot messages on an ipod.
Answering the original question - only some models of iriver play ogg by default. Rest require a better os. :)
