U may ask, windows has those drivers, (inbuilt and it autodetects the modem, so not from vendor) then why does Linux not have them - Most of the vendors do not provide all modem specs needed to build a driver. How windows gets them, we dont know.
Windows does not have in built support for these hardware. It is obtained from the hardware manufacturers. Either you get the driver diskette with your hardware, or microsoft purchases the software to package along with windows.
If linux distributors were to do the same, then linux could no longer be free (of cost).
