Apparently, some people have worked with Maya on Debian and Gentoo before. http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/5235 for more information.

Maya provides RPM packages for Red Hat based distributions.
My OS of choice for you would be one of Debian or Ubuntu or UbuntuStudio. You can choose any of the abovementioned distributions and figure out for yourself.
For Ubuntu: http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-358243.html and http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=66859
I can send you copies of any Linux distribution you'd like to use. Just send me an email and I'll arrange for it.

Thanks a lot for your help. I would be grateful if you could arrange
for a copy of the latest Mandriva. i.e Mandriva One My other question is, how do i convert the Maya RPM package to a Debian based format ?
no need to convert. alien -i xyz.rpm will install an rpm package directly on a debian system. WARNING: while this has worked most of the time dependencies do cause problems with the some packages
