I've used my winmodem using the Lucent Technologies' ltmodem on a Slackware box running 2.2.16. And the throughput was generally far better than what I got from it in Windows. Don't know about the 'special settings' for the Motorola sm56,
There are no special setting for this modem. Just download rpm, install it, & type sm56setup. That's all. You r thru. Now type kppp or invoke internet dialer & give setup for isp.
but ltmodem required kernel-headers to be installed and loadable module support enabled.
It depends on how old your modem & its drivers are. The drivers for motorola sm56 pci modem are released hardly 3 or 4 month back. & they (Motorola ) tested it on RHL 7.1 with kernel 2.4.x so the kernel requirment. It is not necessary that you should have updated kernel to work with winmodems.
