AMD K6-2, slightly underclocked, turns off spontaneously. The only thing I suspect is heat damage to the CPU or mainboard, and want to confirm if possible before I buy a replacement.
Which mobo? ASUS P5AB has some bug in the lmsensor hardware and needs monitoring to be disabled. But mostly cpu overheating or ram overheating due to cpu overheating. Change the cpu heatsink to a larger one (the one used on celeron). You can now overclock a bit. Add an extra chasis fan or run the system without a cover.
I am using two K6-2 550MHz systems one with celeron heatsink and one open cabinet. Both work perfectly.
Possibly related: Linux requires the no-hlt boot parameter, otherwise kernel oops. At least with 2.2.x kernels.
Mine runs on 2.4.18 kernel. Earlier it ran RH6.2 and potato.
