FWIW - My observation - lappies with Intel CPUs the GPU is typically from Intel and a few have NVidia whereas those with AMD CPU typically have the ATI (part of AMD) GPU and few have the NVidia GPU.
True. I havent seen an Intel mobo with a radeon on board.
The OP has already disclosed that his GPU is from the Intel family.
I have an Acer 5542 with ATI Radeon HD 4200 and I have experienced the console lock - no ssh access as well but that is yet another problem
I have a mobo with hd4200. Switching X<>console will freeze the display. But ssh works, as does everything else. Firing up an X app reports no errors. Killing X and restarting does not restore the display. Afaik one has to reboot to restore display. Google said it was an agp kernel bug. Distro was Lucid.
