Your network card is up and running as per the above line You have probably not asigned any ip address. post the output of ifconfig eth0. jtd
Here is the output for ifconfig.
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:08:A1:5F:B6:A2 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:5 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:100 RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:1710 (1.6 Kb) Interrupt:3 Base address:0xbf00
where is your ip address. You need a static ip address. So it means u have misconifigured your network for a dynamic ip.
I ran the Internet Configuration Wizard but to no avail.
That is the problem with these wizards - only a wizard can use it. You need to setup static ip and enter the ip manually
Here is my /etc/network/interfaces file (this is the file which holds the ips etc in Debian GNU/linux).
auto eth0 eth1 iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 network 198.168.0.0 broadcast 198.168.0.255 gateway 198.168.0.1
You will have to find out where your file is (afaik in RH it is /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0)
Do I need to manually turn on DHCP or something ?
No u do not need dhcp.
I noticed that after the what is to be done if my modem is not even detected by Linux. The last time I checked, the thing was supported until RHL 7.1 Why was this model singled out like this ? The modem works peacefully under Win98 and XP
Get one thing absolutely clear here and now. Check first if some hardware is supported under GNU/linux. If it is not dont buy it. The specs to write the drivers are not made available cause the mfg wants to fleece u in cahoots with crooked companies like m$. And if it works under windoze stick to that and suffer the consequences. Also you should switch to debian it is the easiest to configure.
