Here's the infrastructure in Mumbai as I know it:
- Road network. Not the best but they're still there.
the one filled with potholes after a single day of rains? you call those roads? I dont.
Well, did you fill those potholes with some stones around the road rather then just complaining about it ?
- Rail network. One of the best around the world
Oh yeah I forgot about our excellent rail services which like stop after normal 12 hour Bombay rain. Oh and not to mention we cram about 4000 people per coach where only 1000 can fit. Excellent. Is it Gzip or bz2 compression?
Well we must not forget that we are the 2nd highest population in world, bz2 compressions wont help. And on an average around 10,000 new people land into Mumbai in search of roti, kapda, makan, and our constitution provides freedom to live in any part of country without procuring visa.
Mumbai Rail network is one of the oldest worldwide, to make changes on it really takes lot of time. I think you are one the same person who would be yelling when trains dont halt at some stations while there is repair work going around.
- Internet Services. Multiple providers, competition among atleast
two players in every area at all times (Triband and another cable operator run service at the least)
Yes, the kind that fry your motherboard in every rainy season or the ones where you need to quarrel with them for excessive billing. And lets not forget those who go down after a little shower...
Well, if you dont buy a proper electricity gaurd, dont blame the govt about it. Have you ever ventured into providing a service like what your ISP provides ? You shall then know the real issues, I have worked with some of them, and I know how bad it becomes. So Stop ranting, do your own part.
- Electricity. We have decent uptimes; not as good as US yet, but
good enough
Yes, well, probably you live in some affluent location of Mumbai thats why. Many parts of Mumbai are facing load shedding.
Dont forget another wastage that you might have done (like keeping the machine on all the time, whereby wasting electricity, just for the comfort of starting to work the moment you are on desk.) Now thats the reason why you face outage. Did you know that Electricity requirement of Mumbai has grown 3-4 times within last couple of years ? Tell us what you did to save electricity :)
- Water Supply
Same situation as electricity. For affluent areas its pretty good while not so good situation in other areas. People have to actually wake up at 4.30AM and fill buckets and vessels you know...
Did you remember close the water tap while you were brushing / shaving / bathing ? You have to understand that these are natural resources, if you dont preserve it, no govt ever can produce it.
- Security. We have one of the best police forces in India. Sadly,
this point comes in the wake of riots caused by the Sena
Might I remind you the rape charges that officers of this "excellent" police force are facing? Might I mention corruption?
Mumbai Police is the second best worldwide, actually you should be proud to know that they know what time a crime is going to happen and at wat levels and what time :) Corruption is integral part of society, you might have looked at banning it at your levels, tell us what are the things that you did which would have stopped corruption. And you think corruption doesnt happen in the most developed nations ? Then I think you need to experience places around world to feel it :)
- Public transport (BEST, ST)
Ooh right. Sadly, I dont travel by the AC buses. I travel in highly crowded buses such as 266, 79, 38.
That's just the tip of the iceberg. A majority of places in India (and the world) do not have many of the above facilities, so consider yourself lucky.
Did you know that the most advanced society in world (US) doesnt have bus / train service entire nation wide as spread up and consistent as that of BEST / ST.
Should I compare Mumbai to world class financial capitals of countries such as Japan, China, USA? Mumbai stands nowhere. Infact where are the public libraries? Where are the medical facilities? We have the largest slums in Asia. Do you wish to gloat on these sides of Mumbai as well?
Have you been to any of these locations physically ? Probably you might have seen some good parts over TV and trying to compare.
FYI Medicine costs the lowest in India according to worldwide standards, if govt. wasnt here, you would have been victim of marketting from world's best pharma company. Dont expect to get a paracetamol for 50 paise - 1 rupee, in US its 10 - 15 Rs. per unit.
There are discrepancies in all these services but we do not have much of a moral right to sit & complain about these discrepancies as we share responsibility for these discrepancies (littering, wasting water/electricity, condone vandalism, etc)
So you mean to say, as a citizen of this great city, I have no right to complain? I should just shut my mouth and bear with whatever substandard services I get? Look buddy, I dont have the habit of settling for less. I will whine and criticise all I want until someone takes notice of it. And the constitution of this country gives us the right to criticise anything we want and we will exercise it whether anybody likes it or not.
Well, dont just sit there and complain, do your part, if everyone does their part of the job, things would be more easier for the administration.
Quoting a TV show from yesterday....
As a part of Mumbai disaster recovery plan, the city has purchased 12 inflatable boats for a population of 14million.
How many people did you help during the last or current flood rather then sitting at home and watching TV reports on the disasters ?
Infrastructure... ROTFLMAO
I believe the Indian mentality has become to settle for whatever we have. Sure the citizens are at fault. I do feel strongly when people spit / litter on the road or when people double park on a crowded street or when people open the doors of their AC cars just to spit out. But they surely can't be blamed for the influx of people that are coming in or for a 100 year old drainage system or for the corruption amongst their officials.
Rome wasnt built in a Day !! It took years.
As i mentioned, did you do your part of the job ? If yes then you shouldnt be complaining, just keep on doing your part.
Now this thread is going waaay off topic...
Yes it indeed is, coz you are new born kid out of college probably, go out in the real world. When you need to compare, always compare with the down trodden, rather then comparing with the upper portion. Compare India V/s Africa and we are much better.
