RMS was NEVER associated with the Open Source movement. He is the founder of the free software movement, the GNU Project and the Free Software Foundation, and none of these are part of the Open Source movement. Atleast not according to RMS. (And I am a RMS fan.)
Well, as I see it, Open Source movement is essentially the Free Software movement with an aspect which deals with commercial use of "Free" software. According to Bruce Perens, the only difference that RMS and he have is that RMS is a bit "affraid" of the commercialization of free software. Other than that there are no differences between them. Remember, Open Source was coined only to make the idea of Free Software palatable to corporates. As I see it, the Open Source movement couldn't have existed without the Free Software movement started by RMS. Hence, directly or indirectly you have to credit RMS. There is no escaping that ;-)
