Possible but ... with Knoppix, I have experienced improperly detected display on perfectly good hardware; on which LiveCDs of Ubuntu, openSUSE booted fine (1280x1024 @ 24 color depth).
Afaik going above "standard" vesa resolution is always dicey. Afaik upto 800 x 600 is standard and 1024 x 768 also common enough (and implemented in the vga bios in a more or less standard way). Due to volatile nature of a live cd, configuring the display is a problem.
True. In my case FWIW, 1280x1024 res. was auto detected by the hardware detection of the Ubuntu/openSUSE LiveCDs. I did not set them @ boot time.
