I think the best thing to do is to put your hard disk into another GNU/Linu machine and use the fsck there to clean it. Also, the Red Hat Linux installation CD has a rescue mode ... you can boot into that and then clean the disk - no need to move it to a different box.
This experience should be enough to convince you that it is a Bad Thing (tm) to give out your root password.
