I am running mozilla as a normal user, it crashes if I try to load the java applet. But if I run mozilla as root, then the java applet is correctly loaded and runs smoothly. I can't figure out the problem.
Check out bugzilla.mozilla.org. Search for "applet crash". There are 39 bugs, most of them critical. If none of these matches yours, file a new one with a proper testcase. Without knowing what the applet does it's difficult to give any help unless this is a very well known problem.
I am using Red Hat Linux 8.0. (Full Installation - i.e. installed all the packages), and Mozilla 1.0.1.
Consider upgrading to mozilla 1.3 if you have the option. Sometimes upgrading to the latest version automagically disappears the problem.
