I am specifically looking for a CD boot and not USB boot. Its for a particular project which just requires browser & internet connection.
Hence I need a CD bootable OS and present an option to setup networking & open Firefox and start working. No other apps needed. Hence a minimalistic OS with option to setup networking & latest Firefox (mainly supporting web 2.0 websites is good enough )
I would suggest you try Ubuntu on such machines. Chances are, it would work out of box on most of them.
I have had various boot + driver problems with smaller distros (DSL / Slax etc).
What I did was, used Ubuntu and stripped off everything except basic OS + drivers + X Windows + Apps that I needed.
Final size of Live CD was about 100 MB.
